Hi, Oak, where did you celebrate your happy Valentine’s Day yesterday?

Oak:

I didn’t. Nobody cares about me now.

Eddie:

Eh, what about your girlfriend?

Oak:

She’s gone upcountry for work. She might have forgotten by now.

Eddie:

thammai khun thueng daiphuut yaangnan la

Why did you say something like that?

Oak:

thoe mai song kaat   mai thoomaa haeppii waalenthai loey

She didn’t send a card, and she didn’t call to say Happy Valentine either.

Eddie:

phom khitwaa  thoe khong mai saduak mang  phroh yuu taangjangwat

I think maybe it was not convenient for her (to do so) as she’s upcountry.

Oak:

Never mind. What about you? Happy, I guess.

Eddie:

Yeah, quite so. We went to a candle-lit dinner.

Oak:

Eddie:

Whew, no, and please don’t let her know.

Oak:

All right, but this heart-shaped key ring must be from her.

Eddie:

Shs, shs! Not from her either.

Oak:

  • Language check:

Last week we looked at a small word, khong  (with a similar sound to ‘home’ or ‘bone’), which helps making your Thai more natural. As I wrote last week, khong  functions as the modal ‘must’, ‘may’, and ‘might’, and it also acts as an adverb meaning ‘probably’. This week’s conversation gives you more examples as it recycles khong  throughout.

    Language check:

How would you say in Thai in the following situations?

    1. You saw a picture of a baby on your friend’s desk.
      = ………………………………………………
    2. You heard a big crash coming from the road.
      = …………………….……………………………
    3. You friend looks tired and weak.
      = ………………………………………………

    Answer keys:

Eddie an Oak are recapping on their Valentine experiences.
