Um, I saw one… Here. One what, Phong?

Phong:

nueng chabap  aw  yuu nii eng  tae haai pai laai naa

 

หนึ่งฉบับ อ้อ อยู่นี่เอง
แต่หายไปหลายหน้าเลย

One chabap. Ah, here it is, but many naa [pages] have disappeared.

Paul:

aw  riakwaa naa  maidai riakwaa phaen roe

 

อ้อ เรียกว่าหน้า
ไม่ได้เรียกว่าแผ่นเหรอ

Ah you call pages naa, not phaen?

Phong:

mai  phaen ja chai riak kradaat thii yang maidai chai  chen welaa rai pai suue kradaat thii raan

 

ไม่ แผ่นจะใช้เรียกกระดาษ
ที่ยังไม่ได้ใช้  เช่น เวลาที่
เราไปซื้อกระดาษที่ร้าน

No, phaen is used for clean paper like when we go to buy some at a shop.

Paul:

phom kaw tawng phuutwaa  khaw suue kradaat sip phaen  chaimai

 

ผมก็ต้องพูดว่าขอซื้อ
กระดาษสิบแผ่น ใช่ไหม

(Ah) then I have to say, “Can I have kradaat sip phaen?” Right?

Phong:

keng maak  khanompang saenwit kaw nap pen phaen duay na

 

เก่งมาก ขนมปังแซนด์วิช
ก็นับเป็นแผ่นด้วยนะ

Very good! Sandwich bread is counted in phaen, too.

Paul:

roe  phaen chai kap sawngjotmaai daimai

 

เหรอ แผ่นใช้กับ
ซองจดหมายได้ไหม

Really? Can we use phaen with envelopes?

Phong:

maidai  phaen chai kap kradaat khianjotmaai dai  tae sawngjotmaai nap pen sawng.

 

ไม่ได้ แผ่นใช้กับ
กระดาษเขียนจดหมายได้
แต่ซองจดหมายนับเป็นซอง

No we can’t. Phaen can be used with letter paper, but we count envelopes in sawng.

Paul:

ngan phom tawng phuutwaa khaw suue sawngjotmaai sawng sawng

 

งั้นผมต้องพูดว่าขอซื้อ
ซองจดหมายสองซอง

Ah, then I have to say khaw suue sawng jotmaai sawng sawng.

Phong:

thuuktawng  tae muuea khun khian jotmaai sai sawng set laew  ja riak waa chabap

 

ถูกต้อง แต่เมื่อคุณเขียน
จดหมายใส่ซองเสร็จแล้ว
จะเรียกว่าฉบับ

Right, but when you write a letter and put it in an envelope, it’s called a chabap.

Paul:

roe  ooy… phom ja jam daimai nii  wannii phaw khaenii kawn na

 

เหรอ โอ๊ย ผมจะจำได้ไหมนี่
วันนี้พอแค่นี้ก่อนนะ

Is that so? Oh ho, will I be able to remember? That’s enough for today, OK?

This week, I have included a few more worth noting, because they are used with things around you like newspapers, bread, letters, and envelopes. Phong is telling Paul about the proper classifiers for the above items in today's conversation.
