Translating newspaper English to Thai

Nitaya:	sawatdee Aen klap jaak tai laew roe tangtae muuearai
	สวัสดี แอนน์ กลับจากใต้แล้วเหรอ ตั้งแต่เมื่อไร	Hi Anne, when did you get back from the South?
Anne:	klap maa dai aathit nueng laew la tangtae wanthii yiisiphok duuean thii laew
	กลับมาได้อาทิตย์นึงแล้วล่ะ ตั้งแต่วันที่ 26 เดือนที่แล้ว	I’ve been back for a one week, since the 26th of last month.
Nitaya:	pen-ngai sanuk mai phiw duu khlam pai na
	เป็นไง สนุกไหม ผิวดูคล้ำไปนะ	How was it? Did you enjoy yourself? You got a tan.
Anne:	sanuk maak long len namthaley tangtae hok moong thueng jet moong thukwan loey Nit la painai maa ruueplao
	สนุกมาก ลงเล่นน้ำทะเล ตั้งแต่หกโมงถึงเจ็ดโมง ทุกวันเลย นิตล่ะ ไปไหนมาหรือเปล่า	Lots of fun. (I) went to play in the sea very early every morning. What about you? Did you go anywhere?
Nitaya:	maidai painai loey tawnraek khit waa ja khap rot khoen pai Chiang Mai tae maidai pai
	ไม่ได้ไปไหนเลย ตอนแรกคิดว่าจะ ขับรถขึ้นไปเชียงใหม่ แต่ไม่ได้ไป	No, I didn’t go anywhere. At first I intended to drive to Chiangmai, but I didn’t.
Anne:	aao thammai la
	อ้าว ทำไมล่ะ	Eh, how come?
Nitaya:	phuuean thii doenthaang pai kawn thoo maa bawk waa pen kaandoenthaang thii thawramaan maak
	เพื่อนที่เดินทางไปก่อน โทรมาบอกว่า เป็นการเดินทาง ที่ทรมานมาก	A friend who had left earlier phoned back saying she had a very unpleasant trip.
Anne:	mii arai koet khoen roe
	มีอะไรเกิดขึ้นเหรอ	What happened?
Nitaya:	phuuean bawk waa tangtae Rangsit thueng Saraburii rot tit maak khao tawng nang op yuu nai rot tang sawngsaam chuamoong
	เพื่อนบอกว่า รถติดมาก ตั้งแต่รังสิตถึงสระบุรี เขาต้องนั่งอบอยู่ในรถ ตั้งสองสามชั่วโมง	She said the traffic from Rangsit to Saraburi was so backed up that she had to sit for two to three hours in her baking car.
Anne:	yae jang loey na
	แย่จังเลยนะ	That’s terrible!
Nitaya:	Nit loey mai pai diikwaa sia sukkhaphaap plao plao
	นิดเลยไม่ไปดีกว่า เสียสุขภาพเปล่าๆ	I thought it was better not to go then. That’s not good for your health.
Anne:	Anne chookdee thii paithiew sia tangtae kawn Songkraan
	แอนน์โชคดีที่ไปเที่ยว เสียตั้งแต่ก่อนสงกรานต์	I was lucky to go on vacation before Songkran.
Nitaya:	chai Nit lowy dai botrian waa maikhuan doenthaang pai nai chuang wanyut yaao
	ใช่ นิดเลยได้บทเรียนว่า ไม่ควรเดินทางไปไหน ช่วงวันหยุดยาว	Right! I’ve got a lesson — one shouldn’t travel during a long vacation.

Language check:

This week, let’s look closely at a Thai conjunction tangtae. First, the word functions in the same way as “since” does in English when used with an action from a time in the past until a later time.

Two examples from this week’s conversation are:

Aen klap jaak tai laew roe tangtae muuearai (Anne, you’ve been back from the South. Since when?)

… tangtae wanthii yiisiphok duuean thii laew (… since the 26th of last month).

A common variation with tangtae in this sense is naptangtae
— naptangtae khao pen naayok khao tham-ngaan nak maak (Since he became the premier, he’s worked very hard.).

Second, Thais use tangtae when mentioning an action that happened during a period of time in the past. For example, Anne went on vacation two weeks before Songkran, we say Anne paithiew sia tangtae kawn Songkraan. Please notice that tangtae disappears in its English version.
