No, not quite, boss. The fax machine was out of order. The fax hasn’t gone out yet.

Boss:

คุณให้ใครมาดูแล้วยัง

Have you sent for some help?

Sri:

Sii thoo hai chaang maa duu laew kha  iik sakkhruu kaw khong maa
 

ศรีโทรให้ช่างมาดูแล้วค่ะ
อีกสักครู่ก็คงมา

Yes, I’ve phoned a mechanic. He should be here in a minute.

Boss:

oe  laew khun nat luukkhaa laew ruue yang
 

เอ้อ แล้วคุณนัดลูกค้าแล้วหรือยัง

And did you make an appointment with the customer?

Sri:

riaproy kha  khao ja khaomaa tawn baaimoong kha
 

เรียบร้อยค่ะ

Yes, I did. He’s coming in at one.

Boss:

dii maak  khun tuuean phom duay na
 

ดีมาก คุณเตือนผมด้วยนะ

Very good. Remind me, will you?

Sri:

dai kha  huanaa  aw  chaang maa phawdii  chuay duu khrueangfaek hai noy na kha  song awk maidai
 

ได้ค่ะ หัวหน้า อ้อ ช่างมาพอดี
ช่วยดูเครื่องแฟกซ์ให้หน่อย
นะคะ ส่งออกไม่ได้

Sure, boss. Ah, here comes the mechanic. Could you please check the fax machine? It won’t send faxes out.

Boss:

… It’s okay now, ma’am. A piece of scrap got stuck. Now it’s functioning all right, ma’am.

This mechanic is very nice. Don’t you think so, Sri?

    • Language check:

    Besides sentences with riaproy, this lesson suggests some common language for the workplace. One very common word is sia meaning “to break down, to be out of order, to be not working” when used which any kind of machine. Some office appliances that can be sia are:

    khrueang faek (a fax machine),
    khrueang phim (a printer),
    khrueang thaai eykkasaan
    (a photocopier),
    khrueang khawmpewtoe
    (a computer),
    khrueang thoorasap
    (a telephone),
    khrueang lao dinsaw
    (a pencil sharpener),
    plakfai (a socket),
    lawtfai (a light bub, a fluorescent light),     ae (air-conditioning).

    From the examples above, you can see that many office appliances are compound words beginning with the element khrueang . We normally add the term to the front of some of process or substance.

    Another word closely linked to khrueang  is chaang  meaning a mechanic. In the same way as khrueang  we just add chaang in front of words like tatphom , soemsuay, tham rawngthao, ae, fai, phaap, etc.

    riaproy

    This week we’re looking at a handy Thai adjective — riaproy — that you perhaps hear quite often in everyday talk. The word is often used to describe a person’s personality and character. The sense here is similar to that of “gentle, nice neat and well-mannered” or “well-behaved”. On the other hand, riaproy is also used frequently as a follow-up term (you’ll see what I mean from the conversation). Read today’s conversation for examples of both uses. It takes place in an office.
