Eddie:

wannii khaangnawk rawn maak mai

Is it very hot outside today?

Niyom:

wannii mairawn thaorai  muueawaan rawn kwaa yoe

Today’s not that hot. Yesterday was much hotter.

Eddie:

dii  ngan rao awk pai kin arau khaangnawk dii kwaa pai raan doem kaw dai

Good! Then let’s go eat something outside at our usual shop.

Niyom:

aw  raan nan roe  chuang lang maa nii phom mai khoy prathapjai thaorai fiimuue tok

Ah, that one? Lately, I’m not that impressed with them. They’re not that good any more.

Eddie:

ngan ja pai kin thiinai dii la

Where shall we go then?

Niyom:

khun khoey lawng raan huamum klai thanaakhaan laew yang

Have you ever tried the shop on the corner close to the bank?

Eddie:

No, have you?

Niyom:

Yeah, twice.

Eddie:

In that case, it must be good for sure.

Niyom:

aahaan aroy chaidai  raakhaa kaw mai phaeng thaorai  thaem mii ae duay

The food is pretty good, the prices aren’t that expensive, and it’s air-conditioned.

Eddie:

dii maak maak  mii aahaan hai luueak yoe mai

Very good. Do they have a big menu?

Niyom:

mai khoy yoe thaorai  tae thukyaang chaidai mot loey

Not that big, but every dish is good.

Eddie:

thaa yaangnan  mai phitwang nae nae

Well (we) won’t be disappointed, for sure.

Niyom:

riip pai kan loey diew khon ja naen

Hurry up then before it gets crowded.

  • Language watch:

I’m sure you all know the term thaorai as one of a must-know phrase in buying things. You will see its other use - together with mai and interchangeably with mai khoy - a few times in today’s conversation:
    —  wannii mairawn thaorai = Today’s not that hot.
    —  raakhaa kaw mai phaeng thaorai = the prices aren’t that expensive
    —  mai khoy yoe thaorai = (No) not that big.

The pattern for this use is something like — mai / mai khoy  + an adjective + thaorai. And as you may notice, most of the time the expression is always used as a negative answer to a question asking for an opinion. If your answer is positive, you can say:
    —   rawn maak maak (very hot), rawn chaidai (quite hot), rawn kuueap taai (really hot)
    —  phaeng maak (VERY expensive),
    — phaeng huu chii loey
(extremely expensive), phaeng kuueap taai (almost-dead expensive)

    —  khon yoe maak (VERY crowded), khon yoe pen phiseyt (especially crowded), khon yoe phit pakati (unusually crowded)

    Language check:
Answer the following questions in Thai using the pattern mentioned above?

    3.  thanaakhaan yuu klai mai
    = ………………

    4. faen khun rak khun maak mai
    = ………………
    5. krungthep naayuu mai = ………………

    Answer keys: (For negative answers)

Let me begin the column this week with a question to ask you, OK?

How would you tell your Thai friends the following: “Today’s not that hot”, “The food in Thailand isn’t that expensive”, and “The food in this shop isn’t that delicious”. This week’s conversation demonstrates how to express similar feelings in natural Thai.
