  • Language check:

The first taxi refused to take Paul and drove off instantly. This is because he rents a taxi from a company and the taxi is rented out by shifts. A late return of the car would result in a fine for the driver. The first driver asked Paul where he wanted to go in case he was going on the route to the taxi company. If so, he probably would have accepted him.

When the phrase chuang nai khrap is asked, the answer is — loey sii yaek Kluay Nam Thai  pai nit neung. The answer to that phrase helps narrow down the location as Rama IV Road is very long, and Kluay Nam Thai is a main intersection of the road. This also helps the driver to choose the best route to get there.

The term trong nai khrap asks for the exact location of the place. The passenger can say:

trong pai iik nit neung or trong pai kawn and continue with:

    — U-turn khang naa.
    — liew sai thii (soi naa)
    — liew kwa khang naa
    — liew khao pai loey

One common word used together with a variety of words is trong as in — trong nai khrap. Some combinations are:

    — trong nai — Where is it precisely?
    —
    trong walaa — on time
    —
thaang trong — the direct way
    —
    … naalikaa trong — … o’clock sharp

    Vocabulary check:

    1.      When you want a taxi driver to turn left at the next soi?

    2. When the taxi gets to your soi and you want him to stop in front of the next shop?

    Answerkey keys:

    1.      liew sai thii soi naa

    2.     jawt thii raan khang naa

    thaeksii!

Many farang friends have found that it’s not easy to give good directions in Thai when they are in taxis. Sometimes they had difficulty expressing and understanding directional expressions used with taxi drivers. Let’s take a look at an example set in Bangkok.

After shopping Paul and a friend are going home to their apartment in a soi on Rama IV Road. He has signalled a taxi. The taxi pulls over beside him and the driver rolls down the window:
