Thai-English vocabulary from the Thai dailies

Sap Jaak Khao looks at a selection of vocabulary from a timely news story in both Thai and English. It is helpful for learners of both languages

Let’s look at last year’s toll of traffic deaths and injuries over the Songkran period from this archived Thairath excerpt. Compared with those of the year before, detailed in the second paragraph, last year’s figures were slightly lower. What about this year? What were the main causes of the deaths and injuries? Are they still the same?

ส่วนพฤติกรรมเสี่ยงในการตายสูงสุด คือไม่สวมหมวกนิรภัย เมาสุรา และไม่คาดเข็มขัดนิรภัย แต่
เมื่อเปรียบเทียบกับวันที่ 17 เม.ย. ปี 46 พบว่าปี 2546 มีผู้เสียชีวิต 54 คน ปีนี้ 51 คน เท่ากับตายลด
ลง 3 คน บาดเจ็บ ปี 2546 มี 3,134 คน ปีนี้ 2,403 คน เท่ากับบาดเจ็บลดลง 731 คน และเมื่อรวม
ตลอด 9 วัน คือวันที่ 9-17 เม.ย. 47 มีผู้เสียชีวิตสะสม 590 คน แยกเป็นชาย 449 คน หญิง 141 คน
บาดเจ็บรวม 34,448 คน เป็นชาย 24,462 คน หญิง 9,986 คน
