Signs of uneasiness

INTRODUCTION
December is just around the corner, and with that comes a lot of different celebrations and festivities. The list is almost endless, and for most people, including students, this means that there might not be a full week of work until after New Year's Day in January. I, for one, look forward to Christmas the most, even though it always makes me a little bit sad to celebrate this very important holiday in my life without snow. Really, a Christmas should be a white Christmas!

However, during the first week of December, there is an event that is just as important in Thailand as Christmas is in most Western countries. On December 5, it's time to celebrate the auspicious occasion of the 60th anniversary of His Majesty The King's accession to the throne. And that's not all, for those of you outside Thailand who are reading this, it's also His Majesty's birthday.

This year, there is going to be a big party in Benjasiri park. It will start on December 3 and end on December 5. A lot of different activities have been planned, and the goal is to have something for the whole family. I am going to be there, are you?

OUR STORY FROM THE BANGKOK POST

Party in the park

Benjasiri Park to be transformed for royal celebrations

To celebrate the auspicious occasion of the 60th anniversary of His Majesty The King's accession to the throne, as well as his birthday, the Thai Red Cross Society, in collaboration with the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) and the Imperial Hotels Group will organise a charity fair at Benjasiri Park from December 3-5.

To celebrate the auspicious occasion of the 60th anniversary of His Majesty The King's accession to the throne, as well as his birthday, the Thai Red Cross Society, in collaboration with the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) and the Imperial Hotels Group will organise a charity fair at Benjasiri park from December 3 to 5. The event, called ''Our Souls United for His Majesty the King'' will turn the city park into a fun-packed playground for everyone in the family.

''We did something like this, but on a smaller scale, seven years ago to celebrate the sixth cycle of HM the King,'' says Claude J Scheffer, chairperson of the fair's organising committee and general manager of the Imperial Queen's Park. ''For this auspicious year, there will be a bigger celebration. Fund raising for the Red Cross also gives more weight to the fair and organising it in a park will make it fun for the whole family.''

The theme of the event will highlight the King's great talents in music, with an exhibition of his own compositions.

On December 5, there will be a candle lighting ceremony in the evening at 7:29pm, when all fair-goers will have the opportunity to extend their loyalty and love to His Majesty, along with the whole nation.

During the three-day event, 120 booths will be pitched along the park's walkways. After shopping for goods and gifts, gourmands may head for the food court in the park, which will feature tempting dishes from many hotels and restaurants. Scheffer adds that you can enjoy a plate of phad thai, somtam and even fish and chips at the food court, but visitors interested in a more relaxed dining atmosphere, they should definitely visit the outlets at the Imperial Queen's Park.

During the fair, the hotel's seven restaurants will offer 30 percent discounts on a la carte meals and the Parkview Restaurant will offer 50 percent off buffet prices.

In addition, special packages on accommodation and food and beverages, such as buy-one-get-one-free, will be available at the Imperial Hotels Group booths. The TAT booth will also be presenting its Thailand Grand Invitation project to promote local tourism and unseen attractions across the country.

''Most of the action will start after 4pm, when we will have the entertainment and shows,'' Scheffer says. ''Young talent, like look thung bands from the Ching Cha Sawan TV show and jazz bands from Mahidol University's College of Music, will be performing. You may also brush shoulders with stars from TV Channel 3, which is supporting the event.''

Participating in this charity fair may also bring you good fortune, as the 20 baht raffle tickets may result in taking home a pack of golf balls or a brand new TV set.

Our Souls United for His Majesty the King charity fair will be held at Benjasiri Park, from December 3 to 5, from 10am till 9pm each day. For more formation, contact 02-261-9000, ext 5938, 5941 or 5944, or visit www.imperialhotels.com.
