Noi:	Nātālī wâi sǔai  mâk  sǔai kwà khōn Thai bāng khōn sǐa ìk	นาตาลีไหว้สวยมาก สวยกว่าคนไทยบางคน เสียอีก	Natalie does a wai so beautifully; more beautifully than some Thais.
Nita:	wâi yàngrai chūeng chà sǔai là  phî nòi	ไหว้อย่างไรจึงจะสวยล่ะ พี่หน่อย	Noi, can you show me how to do a proper wai?
Noi:	rôem dûai kān prànōm mūe  āo fàmūe tháng sǒng pràkòp kān	เริ่มด้วยการประนมมือ เอาฝ่ามือทั้งสองประกบกัน	Begin with putting your hands together, palm to palm.
Nita:	yàng ní châi mǎi	อย่างนี้ใช่ไหม	Like this?
Noi:	châi láeo  nío tìt kān dûai ná  láeo āo mūe wāng wâi ráwàng òk	ใช่แล้ว นิ้วติดกันด้วยนะ แล้วเอามือวางไว้ที่ระหว่างอก	That’s right. Make sure your fingers are closed, and place your hands in the middle of your chest.
Nita:	ōkāy  láeo thām yàngrāi tò khá	โอเค แล้วทำอย่างไรต่อคะ	Okay. And then?
Noi:	hâi plāi nío chí khôen khâng bōn ná	ให้ปลายนิ้วชี้ขึ้นบ้างบนนะ	Be sure the tips of the fingers point upward.
Nita:	yàng ní châi mǎi	อย่างนี้ได้ไหม	Like this, okay?
Noi:	thùk láeo  tàe khôsòk mâi kāng	ถูกแล้ว แต่ข้อศอกไม่กาง	That’s right, but keep the elbows close to the body.
Nita:	ōkāy ōkāy  thùk mái khá	โอเค ถูกไหมคะ	Okay, okay. Right?
Noi:	sǔai  mâk  tò pāi kôm hǔa lòng mā lék nói	สวยมาก ต่อไปก้มหัวลงมา เล็กน้อย	Beautiful! Now bow your head a little.
Nita:	khâe ní dâi mǎi	แค่นี้ได้ไหม	Is this low enough?
Noi:	dâi dâi  sǔai  láeo  nî pēn kān wâi khōn āyú rǔe thǎná sàmǒe kān ná	ได้ๆ สวยแล้ว นี่เป็นการไหว้คนอาย ุหรือฐานะเสมอกันนะ	Yes, good. This is the wai for the person who is on the same age or status level as yourself.
Nita:	ngán rǒe  thâ wâi phûyài rǔe châonāi lá khá	งั้นเหรอ ถ้าไหว้ผู้ใหญ่ หรือเจ้านายล่ะคะ	Ah, I see! And how’s the wai for a senior or superior?
Noi:	yôk mūe thî prànōm wâi hâi sǔng khôen  hâi nío hǔa-mâe-mūe yù thî chàmùk  kôm hǔa mūean dōem	ยกมือที่ประนมไว้ให้สูงขึ้น ให้นิ้วหัวแม่มืออยู่ที่จมูก ก้มหัวเหมือนเดิม	Raise the hands higher. Place the thumbs at the nose, and bow in the same way.
Nita:	yàng ní dâi mǎi	อย่างนี้ได้ไหม	Is this right?
Noi:	sǔai  mâk  dī mâk  láe thâ wâi phrásǒng ná  yók hǔa-mâe-mūe hâi yù ráwàng khío  yàng ni	สวยมาก ดีมาก และถ้าไหว้ พระสงฆ์นะ ยกหัวแม่มือ ให้อยู่ระหว่างคิ้ว อย่างนี้	Very good! That’s beautiful! And for the monks, place your thumbs between the eyebrows – like this.
Nita:	khòpkhūn phî Nòi  Nítâ chà dâi wâi sǔai  mūean Nātālī	ขอบคุณพี่หน่อย นิต้าจะได้ไหว้สวยเหมือน นาตาลี	Thanks, Noi. Now I’m able to do a beautiful wai like Natalie.

Phût phāsǎ Thai Paradorn Srichaphan presents a Thai wai to the crowd after beating Radek Stepanek on January 11, 2006. — DAVID HANCOCK Achieving the perfect Thai wai / kānwâi hâi sǔai Miss Universe 2005, Natalie Glebova, the Russian-born Canadian, won the hearts of Thai people on the stage in Thailand when she greeted the audience with a perfect Thai wai. After she was crowned, she continued to use the Thai wai as her personal greeting gesture all over the world. She has become well known for being able to perform the Thai wai very gracefully. Several years ago, Thai tennis superstar Paradorn Srichaphan became popularly known as the "ambassador" of the Thai wai. Paradorn always presents the live and TV audiences with a gracious Thai wai at the end of each of his tennis matches. The Thai wai is at once a gesture of salutation, thanks, and respect. The exact position of the hands and thumbs represents the relationship and status between the persons giving and receiving the wai. The gentle bowing of the head also produces a better wai. The returning of the wai is considered a show of good manners also. This week, let's learn how to do a proper wai.
