Chai:

fûtbōnlôk khráng ní phûtàtsǐn phlât yóe

In World Cup 2006 the referees have made a lot of errors.

Frank:

châi  tàtsǐn khàtsǎitā khōndū bòi mâk

Yeah! And many times they’ve ruled contrary to what the spectators thought.

Chai:

dōichàphó kāntàtsǐn hâi jùtthôt

Especially on decisions that resulted in a penalty kick.

Frank:

lûklámnâ kô phìt yóe

It’s even worse for offside calls.

Chai:

Àmērákā khōng rúsúeng nāi rùeangní dī  tông tàkrôp pāi phróh kāntàtsǐn châopānhǎ

The United States may know that better than anybody, because a questionable call forced them out.

Frank:

nàn nà sì  ē… bāilǔeang sǒng bāi pēn bāidāeng  châimǎi

เอ

Yeah! Eh, two yellow cards equal a red card, right?

Chai:

châi  láeo tông òk chàk sànǎm pāi

Yes, and the player is sent off the pitch.

Frank:

tàe nāi nât ráwàng Óstrēlīa kàp Khrō-ē-chīa …

….

But in the game between Australia and Croatia, ….

Chai:

kāmmákān lūem hâi bāidāeng

The referee forgot to give the red card!

Frank:

châi  lǔeachûea chīng chīng  tàe thām àrāi mâidâi

Yeah, unbelievable! But nothing could be done.

Chai:

rāo tông khâochāi ná  bāngkhráng kô phlât pāi pēn rûeang thāmmáchât

We have to understand that sometimes they just make a mistake. It’s only natural.

Frank

phǒm khît wâ thûkkhōn yàk thām nâthî hâi dī thîsùt

I think everybody wants to do the best job possible.

Chai:

yàk hâi kāmmákān thôpthūan kāntàtsǐn jàk phâpchá jāng lōei

I’d really like the referees to review their decisions after consulting the replay.

Frank:

hûe  kāmmákān bāng khōn kô yōmrâp lǎng chàk dū phâpchá

Humm! Some referees admitted (they were wrong) after reviewing the replay.

Chai:

thâ yàngnán jà klàp khāmtàtsǐn dâimǎi nâ

In such a case, can they reverse the decision?

Frank:

ērrr! nâkhít ná

Uhmm, uh…. That’s a good question!

    World Cup / bāilǔeang bāidāeng

World Cup referees line up for the cameras in New Isenburg, near Frankfurt. — AP

One of the toughest jobs, and one I don't ever want, is that of a judge. The job is much more difficult if you are working in a world-class tournament, such as the World Cup, where seasoned pros are contesting for honour, pride, fame and money. That's why I truly respect the referees, or phûtàtsǐn’.

It's amazing they are able to remain calm under tremendous pressure from both the players and the spectators, while coping with the tawdry tactics and tenacious tricks of the players. I certainly would like to know what they are thinking when players surround them and argue over a decision. That's especially true for the head referee on the pitch. And as for the linesmen, every time the flag is pointed I hear conflicting reactions – mâi lám, lám chât chât.

Several matches in this year's World Cup, have had many controversial decisions. Let's discuss some of those questionable decisions. Thai fans watched this year's World Cup with pride, as we have Pratchaya Phoemphanit representing Thailand on the tournament's referee team. We've seen him in action twice and hope to see him waving the flag again.
