Frank, have you ever seen this picture?

Frank:

mâikhōei  tàe phǒm khîtwâ pēn rûp kīng láe kwīn nâenōn

ไม่เคย แต่ผมคิดว่าเป็นรูปคิงและควีนแน่นอน

Never, but I think it’s the picture of the king and the queen.

Chai:

pēn rûp nāilǔang láe phrákhûmân sàdèt klàp thāi khráng thî sǎm

เป็นรูปในหลวงและพระคู่หมั้น เสด็จกลับไทยครั้งที่ 3

It’s the picture of the king and his fiancé taken on his third homecoming.

Frank:

ô sōng sàdàt klàp thāng rūea

อ้อ ทรงเสด็จกลับทางเรือ

Ah ha, he traveled back by ship!

Chai:

châi  pràchāchōn dīchāi mâk  pāi fâo râp sàdèt kān mâkmāi

ใช่ ประชาชนดีใจมาก ไปเฝ้ารับเสด็จกันมากมาย

Right. People were very happy. They flocked to welcome him.

Frank:

nâenōn  khǎo khōi thî chà hěn phrá-ōng mā nān láew

แน่นอนเขาคอยที่จะเห็นพระองค์มานานแล้ว

For sure. They had waited for so long to see him.

Chai:

pī nán khōnthāi dâi hěn phrárât phíthī sǎmkhān sǎm phíthī dûaikān

ปีนั้นคนไทยได้เห็นพระราชพิธีสำคัญสามพิธีด้วยกัน

That year Thai people saw three very important royal ceremonies.

Frank:

phíthī àrāi bāng là

พิธีอะไรบ้างล่ะ

What were they?

Chai:

phíthī râek pēn phrárât phíthī thàwǎi phráphlōeng phrábōrōmmàsòp râtchákān thì pàet

พิธีแรกเป็นพระราชพิธีถวายพระเพลิงพระบรมศพ รัชกาลที่  ๘

First, there was the cremation ceremony for King Rama VIII.

Frank:

ūem pēn rūeang sâo ná

อือม์ เป็นเรื่องเศร้านะ

Umm, that’s a sad story.

Chai:

chài  tòmā pēn phrárât phíthī à-phá-sèk-sǒm-rôt kàp phrákhūmôn

ใช่ ต่อมาเป็นพระราชพิธีอภิเษกสมรสกับพระคู่หมั้น

Right. Later there was the royal wedding with his fiancé.

Frank:

ān ní pēn rūeang nâ yīndī

อันนี้เป็นเรื่องน่ายินดี

That was a joyful event!

Chai:

láewkâw  phrárât phíthī bōrōmrāchāphísèk mûea hâ phrúetsàphākhōm

แล้วก้อพระราชพิธีบรมราชาภิเษก เมื่อ ๕ พฤษภาคม

Then the coronation on May 5.

Frank:

ān ní kô pēn rūeang nâ yīndī

อันนี้ก็เป็นเรื่องน่ายินดี

This is also a wonderful event!

Chai:

Fráenk ū nâe mâk

แฟรงค์ ยูแน่มาก

Frank, you’re so smart!

Royal vocabulary watch:

These are useful words and phrases when talking about a member of the royal family:

1.      phrákhûmân = a royal fiancé

2.      fâo râp sàdèt = to welcome a member of the royal family

3.      phíthī = a ceremony, ritual

4.      phrárât phíthī = a royal ceremony, ritual

5.      thàwǎi phráphlōeng = to cremate (only for a member of the royal family)

6.      phrábōrōmmàsòp = a king’s body

7.      à-phá-sèk-sǒm-rôt = the royal wedding

8.      bōrōmrāchāphísèk = the coronation

Don’t forget these three high frequency words we talked about last week.

9.      phrá-ōng = third person pronoun

10.  sàdèt = to go, to proceed

11.  sōng = a prefix added to a verb

    For the second of the six-part series on celebrations for the 60th Anniversary of His Majesty the King's Accession to the Throne, we'll cover the time when His Majesty the King was just reaching adulthood.

    Thais had waited for His Majesty the King to return home since August 19, 1946. To their great delight on March 24, 1950, they were very happy to learn that the king had safely reached Thailand's port aboard the Selandia.

    On his third homecoming, three regal events awaited the king. First, there was the royal cremation for his late brother, King Ananda Mahidol, Rama VIII, which took place in March. On April 28, there was the royal wedding of His Majesty and his beautiful fianc? MR Sirikit Kitiyakara. Finally, His official coronation followed on May 5, which is celebrated today as Coronation Day.

    This lesson revolves around the words and phrases used when talking about members of the royal family and other related common words in natural Thai.
