Japanese Buddhists struggle to win back believers
HIROKO TABUSHI
- The Kamiyacho Open Terrace caf? in central Tokyo has all the
trappings of a trendy establishment - good coffee, homemade
dessert and an airy terrace.
- But what makes the caf? truly interesting is its setting:
inside the Buddhist Komyoji temple, one of many across Japan
offering new services - concerts, discos, yoga classes - in
a struggle to stay relevant despite an increasingly secular
society.
- "For Japanese, temples were once a part of daily life," said
the caf?'s 24-year-old owner and monk, Keisuke Matsumoto. "I
want Kamiyacho Open Terrace to be a place people can drop in
casually
and perhaps become a little curious about Buddhism.
- About 94 million Japanese were registered as Buddhists in
2005, almost three-quarters of the country's population. But
for many the only time they enter a temple is to attend a funeral
- driving many of the country's 75,000 temples to the verge
of bankruptcy.
- At Matsumoto's caf? that overlooks a garden dotted with gravestones,
visitors don't pay with money, but with prayer. All the coffee,
tea, and cakes served by robe-clad monks in the open terrace
are free. Instead the monks - all volunteers from nearby temples
- suggest patrons put their hands together in prayer at the
temple's grand alter before they leave.

วัดหนึ่งในหลายๆ วัดทั่วประเทศ
ญี่ปุ่นที่ให้บริการแบบใหม่ๆ เช่น
จัดคอนเสิร์ต ดิสโก และชั้นเรียน
โยคะ เป็นการพยายามปรับบทบาท
ให้เหมาะกับยุคสมัย ในสังคมที่
เน้นไปทางโลกมากขึ้นทุกที

ประชากรทั้งหมดแจ้งในทะเบียนว่า
นับถือพุทธศาสนา แต่มีมากที่เข้า
วัดเพียงเฉพาะเมื่อไปงานศพเท่านั้น
เป็นเหตุให้วัด 75,000 แห่งทั่ว
ประเทศใกล้จะตกอยู่ในสภาพขัดสน
- ที่ร้านคาเฟ่ของภิกษุมัตสุโมโต ซึ่ง
มองออกไปเป็นสวนที่มีป้ายหลุม
ฝังศพตรงโน้นบ้างตรงนี้บ้างนั้น
ลูกค้ามารับประทานน้ำชา กาแฟ
ขนมต่างๆได้โดยไม่ต้องจ่ายเงิน
แต่จ่ายเป็นการสวดมนต์แทน โดย
มีเหล่าภิกษุในเครื่องนุ่งห่มสบงจีวร
เป็นผู้บริการ ทุกรูปมาจากวัดใกล้ๆ
มาช่วยด้วยความสมัครใจ ก่อนลูกค้า
จะกลับ ทุกรูปจะสอนให้พนมมือไหว้

ในด้านงานแปล
ท่านผู้อ่านจะได้เห็นการปรับคำบางคำเพื่อให้เหมาะสมกับบริบท ตัวอย่างแรกคือ
ชื่อเรื่อง ซึ่งถ้าจะแปลตรงตัวว่า พุทธศาสนิกชนญี่ปุ่นพยายามให้คนกลับมาสนใจในศาสนาใหม่
ไม่ค่อยเหมาะเพราะเยิ่นเย้อเกินกว่าจะเป็นพาดหัวข่าว และในเมื่อตามเนื้อข่าวเป็น
พระภิกษุผู้ปลุก
ศรัทธา ดิฉันจึงปรับให้เป็นอย่างที่เห็นค่ะ
ตัวอย่างที่สอง
คือการแปลวลี
...in a struggle to stay relevant ... คำที่ต้องตีความคือ
relevant เพราะ
ตามพจนานุกรมแปลว่า ความสัมพันธ์ ความเกี่ยวข้อง ความเหมาะสมกับวัตถุประสงค์หรือกฎเกณฑ์
ความหมายในบริบทนี้จึงน่าจะเข้าได้กับความหมายสุดท้าย แต่ก็ต้องปรับสำนวนแปลให้เหมาะสม
ด้วยค่ะ เช่นใช้ว่า...เป็นการพยายามปรับบทบาทให้เหมาะกับยุคสมัย
หรือจะว่าเป็นการปรับให้เข้ากับ
สภาพสังคมก็น่าจะได้
ตัวอย่างที่สาม
คำว่า
.. to the verge of bankruptcy. ถ้าแปลตรงตัวจะได้ว่า ใกล้จะล้มละลาย
คำว่า
ล้มละลายมีน้ำเสียงออกมาในทางธุรกิจการเงิน ซึ่งแม้จะเป็นคำที่ตรงความหมายแท้ๆ
แต่เมื่อจะใช้
กับวัด ดิฉันจึงอยากปรับเป็น สภาพขัดสน มากกว่าค่ะ
