Phût phāsǎ Thai Whats in a temple? / mī àrāi nāi wât A temple has many buildings inside and each building serves a unique purpose
Thailand has more than 30,000 temples throughout the country. Most temples in Bangkok boast elaborately decorated Thai-style buildings. Important temples have many buildings of various sizes that serve a multitude of functions. In contrast, a small ua couple of buildings with some rustic kuti (living quarters for monks). The glamor of elaborate decorations and elegant architecture decreases the farther the temple is from the capital city. Last week, we talked about two groups of people living in a temple luksit and ajarn; and the building they live in kuti. This week's conversation goes on to other important elements found in the larger temples in Bangkok. |
