Phût phāsǎ Thai Whats in a temple? / mī àrāi nāi wât (part 2) On occasion, you should visit a temple on a day when there are no special events or celebrations planned and experience the peace and serenity of the quiet temple grounds
Many Buddhists visit temples while on sabbatical and on important Buddhist holy days, when temples are crowded and teeming with religious and social ceremonies. So on days when there are no special events planned, many people like to drop by a temple and give some quiet time to themselves, and maybe softly recite some prayers in front of the main Buddha image in the ubosoth. Each temple is unique and has attractive Thai-style architecture worth admiring. And because the spacious temple grounds are designed to accommodate large crowds and various functions, the place is quite restful and pleasant when the crowds are absent. This week's conversation talks about other buildings you might expect to see in a temple compound and some common ceremonies you might witness in the ubosoth. |
