Nui:	Bóp  yēnní wâng mǎi  pāi kīn tóchīn dûai kān	บ็อบ เย็นนี้ว่างไหม ไป กินโต๊ะจีนด้วยกัน	Bob, are you free this evening? I’ll treat you to a Chinese-style dinner
Bob:	ē  mī àrāi phísèt rǒe	เอ มีอะไรพิเศษเหรอ	Ah ha, is there a special reason?
Nui:	phǒm chôkdī thùk hǔai sǎmtūa nít nòi mûea wānsǎo thî láew	ผมโชคดีถูกหวยสามตัว นิดหน่อยเมื่อวันเสาร์ที่ แล้ว	I won a bit of money from samtua last Saturday.
Bob:	dīchāi dûai ná  láe khòpkhūn thî chà líang khâo phǒm  tàe phǒm mâi khâochāi khām wâ sǎmtūa	ดีใจด้วยนะ และขอบคุณ ที่จะเลี้ยงข้าวผม แต่ผม ไม่เข้าใจคำว่า สามตัว	Lucky you. Thanks for inviting me to dinner. But I don’t understand what samtua means.
Nui:	sǎmtūa kô khūe lék sǎm làk sùt thái khǒng lôttōerî rāngwān thî nùeng	สามตัวก็คือเลขสามหลัก สุดท้ายของลอตเตอรี่ รางวัลที่หนึ่ง	Samtua is the last three digits of the first prize in the lottery.
Bob:	ô  hǔai kô khūe lôttōerî châi mǎi	อ้อ หวยก็คือลอตเตอรี่ ใช่ไหม	So huai is the lottery, right?
Nui:	châi  tàe sùanmâk hǔai chà mǎithǔeng hǔai tâidīn mâk kwà	ใช่ แต่ส่วนมากหวยจะ หมายถึงหวยใต้ดินมาก กว่า	Right, but (the term) huai tends to refer to the underground one!
Bob:	thâ pēn lôttōerî rátthàbān lâ	ถ้าเป็นลอตเตอรี่รัฐบาล ล่ะ	What if it’s the state lottery then?
Nui:	rāo kô chà phût wâ thùk lôttōerî  kòn nâ nán phǒm kô thùk sǒng tūa	เราก็จะพูดว่าถูกลอตเตอ รี่ก่อนหน้านั้นผมก็ถูก สองตัว	We’d say thuk lottoeri. I also won songtua (the last two digits) before that.
Bob:	khūn kô pēn khōn mī chôk thāng nī sì Nui	คุณก็เป็นคนมีโชคทางนี้ สิ หนุ่ย	Then you’re lucky with numbers, Nui.
Nui:	mâiròk  tângtàe kòet  phǒm phôeng thùk hǔai sǒng ngûat ní làe	ไม่หรอก ตั้งแต่เกิด ผม เพิ่งถูกหวยสองงวดนี้ แหละ	I don’t think so. I’ve only won twice since I was born.
Bob:	khūn dâi lêk mā chàk nǎi	คุณได้เลขมาจากไหน	Where did you get the numbers from?
Nui:	fāen phǒm fǎn wâ phǒm khàp rôt chōn nâbân pǒm kô lōei núek sànùk  lōng súe lék rôt láe lêk bân dū	แฟนผมฝันว่าผมขับรถ ชนหน้าบ้าน ผมก็เลยนึก สนุก ลองซื้อเลขรถและ เลขบ้านดู	My girlfriend dreamed that I rammed my car into the house. So I thought I should use the numbers from my license plate and my house number to pick the lottery tickets.
Bob:	ngán tông hâi fāen khūn fǎn bòi bòi láeo là	งั้นต้องให้แฟนคุณฝัน บ่อยๆ แล้วล่ะ	Then your girlfriend needs to dream more often from now on.

Phût phāsǎ Thai I won the (underground) lottery. / phǒm thùk hǔai Many people dream of gaining money the easy way, but the dream comes true for only a lucky few An official of the government lottery office, right, shows a numbered ball during a demonstration of new lottery drawing equipment designed by King Mongkut 's Institute of Technology, Lat Krabang. — Apichart Jinakul Betting on the underground lottery has long been a serious hobby for many Thais. For some, it's just an occasional stroke of luck. Every sixteenth day and last day of the month are wan huai ok (lottery drawing day). Someone you know may be lucky enough to win a prize in the lottery, i.e., they may thuk huai or thuk lottoeri. It's quite interesting how Thais pick their numbers for lottery tickets. Some use a regular set of numbers, such as numbers on their license plates, house or bank account, children's birth dates and so on. In our conversation today, Nui tells Bob the method he uses to pick his lucky numbers.
