Phût phāsǎ Thai Chatukham Rammathep craze on the wane / Chàtùkhām (rāmmáthêp) khǎ lōng The craze this year for the sacred amulets, which were first made two decades ago, is now dwindling dramatically
Chatukham (rammathep) talismans have declined in popularity two months earlier than predicted by some experts in the amulet-trading business. Last month, a Thai-language daily published a first page story that some chatukham editions were being dumped onto the market for only five baht apiece, however, attracting only a few buyers. The fad got out of hand earlier this year, with more than 1,000 different models being produced to meet the high demand, with each production numbering from 10,000 to 100,000 pieces. However, the sale of fake amulets has spurred the decline of the popularity of these amulets among the people. In general, we Buddhists buy amulets for two reasons - we have faith in the amulets' sacredness or we value them as works of art. However, in case of Chatukham, there is another reason - making profit, and those who buy for this reason are the ones who suffer from its decline in demand. |
