Nui:	dâi lōei  rûeang thêtsàkān  kīnchē  roe	ได้เลย เรื่องเทศกาลกินเจเหรอ	Sure, about the Chinese Vegetarian Festival?
Bob:	châi  phǒm  yàk rú rûeang khàbūan phrá  thāmmāi tông thōrámān tūa-ēng dûai	ใช่ ผมอยากรู้เรื่องขบวนพระ  ทำไมต้องทรมานตัวเองด้วย	Right, I’d like to know about the deity parades. Why is there self-mortification?
Nui:	ānní pēn khwāmchûea yàng nùeng wâ ōng sàksìt nāi râng khōnsōng ráp khwāmthúk thāen pràchāchōn	อันนี้เป็นความเชื่ออย่างหนึ่ง ว่าองค์ศักดิ์สิทธิ์ในร่างคนทรง รับความทุกข์แทนประชาชน	This demonstrates one’s belief that the deities possessing the mediums are suffering from the torment for their believers.
Bob:	khōnsōng mâi chèppùat rǒe	คนทรงไม่เจ็บปวดเหรอ	Are the mediums in pain?
Nui:	mâi ná  khōnsōng chûea kān wâ ōng sàksìt thî sōng yù nāi râng khǎo chûai hâi mâi rúsùek chèppùat	ไม่นะ คนทรงเชื่อว่าองค์ศักดิ์ สิทธิ์ที่ทรงอยู่ในร่างเขาช่วย ให้ไม่รู้สึกเจ็บปวด	I don’t think so. The participants believe that the spirits that occupy their bodies protect them from pain.
Bob:	ūem  phràphēnī ní mī mā nān láeo yāng	อือม์ ประเพณีนี้มีมานาน แล้วยัง	Um, how long has the tradition been in practice?
Nui:	rói khwà pī láeo là	ร้อยกว่าปีแล้วล่ะ	For more than a century.
Bob:	láeo thāmmāi chūeng mī thî phūkèt láe trāng	แล้วทำไมจึงมีที่ภูเก็ตและตรัง	And why is it seen in Phuket and Trang?
Nui:	thî chīng  thî chāngwàt ùen kô mī ná  tàe mâi pēn thî rúchàk thâo thî trāng kàp phūkèt	ที่จริง ที่จังหวัดอื่นก็มีนะ แต่ ไม่เป็นที่รู้จักเท่าที่ตรังกับภูเก็ต	Actually, it’s seen in other provinces as well, but it is not as well-known as the ones in Trang or Phuket.
Bob:	láeo chùtpràsǒng chīng chīng khǒng kān kīnchē  khūe àrāi	แล้วจุดประสงค์จริงๆ ของการ กินเจคืออะไร	And what is the real purpose of the Chinese Vegetarian Festival?
Nui:	phûea thām tūa hâi bōrísùt tháng kāi láe chāi  dōi kān mâi kīn nûea sàt láe thǔe sǐn	เพื่อทำตัวให้บริสุทธิ์ทั้งกาย และใจ โดยการไม่กินเนื้อสัตว์ และถือศีล	To purify oneself physically and mentally by refraining from eating animal meat and following precepts.
Bob:	ūem  nāi pī nùeng yùt khâ sàt pāi kâo wān nî  sàt kô rót chīwît pāi yóe ná	อือม์ ในปีหนึ่งหยุดฆ่าสัตว์ไป เก้าวันนี่ สัตว์ก็รอดชีวิตไป เยอะนะ	Um, by avoiding the taking of animals’ lives for nine days once a year, we can save a lot of animals.
Bob:	châi  yàng nîi kô lá bàp dâi pī lá khráng kô yāng dī  chīng mǎi	ใช่ อย่างน้อยก็ละบาปได้ปี ละครั้งก็ยังดี จริงไหม	Right, it’s good to refrain from committing sins at least once a year, right?

Phût phāsǎ Thai Chinese Vegetarian Festival / thêtsàkān kīnchē The parades in the Chinese Vegetarian Festival are most spectacular in Phuket and Trang A participant of the Chinese Vegetarian Festival walks in a parade through the streets of Phuket with an umbrella pierced through his tongue, October 2, 2003. Devout Chinese abstain from eating meat products during the nine-day festival, which involves cultural performances and culminates with acts of self-mortification. — Adrees Latif Thetsakan kinche, or Chinese Vegetarian Festival, has begun. Actually, kinche (the Chinese way) is slightly different from normal vegetarian practice. Kinche involves not eating meat, animal products (dairy goods and eggs), nor vegetables with strong odor such as garlic, shallots and Chinese chives. Normally, strict vegetarians begin the practice a week before and continue a week after the festival. The tradition includes wai chao (to pay homage to deities) on the third, sixth and ninth days by going to many altars in Chinese temples and reciting prayers to purify their minds and to ask for blessings. Adorning white clothes is another practice – especially on those three special days. Besides Bangkok's China Town, the tradition is strong in the southern provinces like Trang and Phuket, where the culture has been passed down for generations with little change. Now it has become one of most talked-about traditions of those areas.
