Eddie:	thî kòet khôen thî nǒng khāi  châi mǎi	ที่เกิดขึ้นที่หนองคาย ใช่ไหม	The ones at Nong Khai, right?
Sunee:	châi  chǎn pāi hěn dûai tā tōn-ēng mā láeo mûea pī sǒng hâ sì sì	ใช่ ฉันไปเห็นด้วยตาตนเอง มาแล้วเมื่อปี 2544	Right. I went there to see them with my own eyes in 2001.
Eddie:	rǒe  láeo khūn khít wâ pēn rûeang chīng rǔe mánût thām khôen	เหรอ แล้วคุณคิดว่าเป็นเรื่อง จริงหรือมนุษย์ทำขึ้น	Really! What do you think – real or man-made?
Sunee:	chǎn tòp mâi dâi  Eddie	ฉันตอบไม่ได้ เอ็ดดี้..	I can’t answer that, Eddie.
Eddie:	nǎi  lâksànà mān pēn yàngrāi	ไหน ลักษณะมันเป็นอย่างไร	Okay, tell me what they are like.
Sunee:	pēn mǔean fōng ākàt sǐ chōmphū thâptīm  khànàt lûk thēnnît  phùt khôen chàk mâenám khǒng	เป็นเหมือนฟองอากาศ สีชมพูทับทิม ขนาดลูก เทนนิส ผุดขึ้นจากแม่น้ำโขง	(They’re) like ruby-pink bubbles the size of a tennis ball floating from the Mekhong River.
Eddie:	mī sǐang mǎi	มีเสียงไหม	Do they make sound?
Sunee:	mâi mī  mâi mī sǐang  mâi mī klìn  tàe mī nám kràsēn  bāng lûk kô khôen sǔng	ไม่มี ไม่มีเสียง ไม่มีกลิ่น แต่มี น้ำกระเซ็น บางลูกก็ขึ้นสูง	No, (they’re) soundless and odorless and create a splash. Some float up high.
Eddie:	mûea khôen mā láeo pāi nǎi	เมื่อขึ้นมาแล้วไปไหน	Where do they go after that?
Sunee:	chà tàek pāi nāi ākàt mǔean kàp fōng sàbù tàek lōei	จะแตกไปในอากาศเหมือน กับฟองสบู่แตกเลย	(They) burst in the air just like the way a soap bubble does.
Eddie:	khôen mā yóe mǎi	ขึ้นมาเยอะไหม	Do they come in big numbers?
Sunee:	pī nán khôen yóe mák  tōn rôt klàp òk mā ná  chǎn yāng mōng hěn chàk nâtàng rôt lōei	ปีนั้นขึ้นเยอะมาก ตอนรถ กลับออกมานะ ฉันยังมอง เห็นจากหน้าต่างรถเลย	Loads of them that year. When the bus was leaving the scene, I still saw a lot of them from my window.
Eddie:	ūem  mī kān sùeksǎ thāng wîttháyāsàt mǎi	อือม์ มีการศึกษาทาง วิทยาศาสตร์ไหม	Um, is there any scientific study on this?
Sunee:	mī tàe yāng mâi mī khô sàrùp thî nâenōn	มี แต่ยังไม่มีข้อสรุปที่แน่นอน	Yes, but there isn’t any convincing conclusion yet.

Phût phāsǎ Thai The naga fireballs / bângfāi pháyā nâk Are the fireballs floating from the Mekhong a supernatural occurrence made by naga in order to pay homage to Buddha, a hoax or a natural phenomenon? Dr Manas Kanoksilp: "The Naga fireballs are a natural phenomenon which can be explained by recourse to scientific principles and experiments" Photographers name: — Somkid Chaijitvanit Last Friday marked the end of Buddhist Lent Every year on this day, thousands of people are attracted to one particular place in Nong Khai, a northeastern province on the bank of the Mekhong River. The attraction is an unexplained phenomenon, 'naga fireballs', which are ruby-pink fireballs floating up from the Mekhong every year on the very same day - the full moon day of the eleventh lunar month. Many investigations and researches have been carried out to prove whether the cause was natural, supernatural, or man-made. So far, no conclusion has been reached. One systematic study is a 14-year research by Dr Manas Kanoksilp, a medical doctor at Nong Khai provincial hospital, who did not pay much attention to the fireballs, but experienced a fireball popping up five meters in front of him. According to Dr Manas, the river releases methane gas, and he is confident that this is the cause of the fireballs. However, there are still many more complicated factors to look into.
