Pratin chairs panel vetting EC finalists

Wut Nontharit

Pol Gen Pratin Santiprapop has been elected chairman of a senate panel set up to screen 10 Election Commission candidates.

The 10 were picked by the Supreme Court and a selection panel chaired by Constitutional Court president Prasert Nasakul. The Senate will later choose five to sit on the commission.

The Pratin panel was set up following allegations some of the candidates had dubious backgrounds and were unfit to sit on the commission.

Sawai Prammanee (Nakhon Ratchasima) was named first deputy chairman, and Chumpol Silpa-archa (Bangkok) second deputy chairman.

Kaewsan Atipho (Bangkok) was appointed secretary, and Sak Kawsaegruang (Bangkok) its spokesman.

The Pratin panel set up two sub-committees. The first will study the selection process and qualifications of the10 candidates, and the other will check their records and conduct.

Pol Gen Pratin, a Bangkok senator and former national police chief, said the sub-panels were expected to complete their assignments in 30-45 days.
