Sant backs sign-up campaign
Critics unaware of nature of democracy
A
leading democracy activist has supported the sign-up campaign
by Dr Sem Pringpuangkaew to save Thaksin Shinawatra from losing
the premiership.
Mr Thaksin will have to step down if
the Constitutional Court upholds the National Counter Corruption
Commission's ruling he tried to hide his assets.
Sant Hatthirat, chairman of the Foundation
for Democratic Heroes, said the campaign by the a five-time
former public health minister should not be seen as putting
pressure on the Constitutional Court.
He was not forcing anybody to sign the
letter he intends to submit to the parliament president.
"The Constitutional Court is not an ordinary
court of justice," Mr Sant said.
"Its job is to decide political cases
involving the interpretation of the constitution.
"Since the new constitution wants the
people to take part in political activities and express their
political opinions, all independent agencies should listen to
them, including the Constitutional Court."
Those opposing Dr Sem's campaign did
not understand the true nature of democracy, he said.
