Grounds
seen for lese majeste
MONGKOL
BANGPRAPA
Metropolitan police are preparing to press lese majeste charges
against those making and distributing election campaign stickers
with the monarch's remarks, after finding some improper words had
been added to one of the remarks.
Earlier, people from Klong Toey community had sought legal action
against those publicising the stickers and police had named Democrat
deputy leader Jurin Laksanavisit and his personal secretary Pratthana
Khongnak as likely suspects.
The Democrat party and the Thai Rak Thai later accused each other
of trying to use the controversy to frame each other.
Metropolitan Police Bureau deputy commissioner Pol Maj-Gen Kamol
Kaewsuwan said initial investigations suggested suspects in the
case must face lese majeste charges for adding the phrase ``the
richer people are, the more they cheat'' to His Majesty the King's
remark on one of the stickers. However, arrest warrants would not
be issued until the Office of His Majesty's Principal Private Secretary
confirmed that the remarks on these stickers had indeed been distorted,
he said.
``At this stage, I still want Miss Pratthana, a major witness in
the case, to come see us if she is innocent and has nothing to hide,
or police will consider issuing an arrest warrant [for her],''
the deputy city police chief said.
He said Democrat MP hopeful for Klong Toey Thanom Onkhetpol and
deputy Democrat leader Khunying Kallaya Sophonpanich will report
to police for questioning on the case on Feb 10 and 11, respectively,
after having sought a postponement last week.
