Democrat party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva hands an election campaign card to a vendor while campaigning in the Tha Phra Chan pier area yesterday. The party has unveiled a policy platform which it says can be implemented within 99 days. |
The Democrat party yesterday vowed it could in 99 days from taking the helm of the next government, offer free education, a million-baht tambon fund, free electricity and a cut in fuel prices.
Party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva and 36 other party executives and candidates competing for seats in Bangkok announced yesterday the operations plan they promised could be delivered 99 days from taking office as they vied for votes in the Tha Phra Chan area.
''The 99-day urgent, practical operations plan'' was based on expectations people had told the Democrats of during the past year that the party had been promoting its People's Agenda policy platform throughout the country.
Mr Abhisit said if the Democrats were selected to run the country, students in the upcoming May 2008 semester would go to school free of charge, with free uniforms and study materials.
To bring down the cost of living, the party would cancel motorists' contribution to the State Oil Fund, resulting in gasohol and diesel price reductions. It would also boost the incentive for each small power consumer from five to 15 units per kilowatt/hour of free electricity use.
He said the Democrats opposed the government's plan to cut the subsidy for liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), or cooking gas, as this would result in food prices going up.
Through the sufficiency economy fund, the party promised to inject each tambon with a budget of one to two million baht for career development.
