Siam Society and ThaiCraft Fair Trade are holding "Timeless Siamese Heritage", a day of fun activities to support Thai crafts and traditions, at the Siam Society on Dec 10 from 10am-5pm.
Following their very successful and popular joint event last year on the same date, the fair will reflect how a historically long tradition in village arts and crafts within the diverse cultures of Siam are adapted and brought together to provide exciting products for contemporary life in Thailand.
Available for sale are quality Thai handicrafts - traditional and seasonal - direct from village artisans from all corners of the country, such as baskets from Nan, Chai Nat and Narathiwat; silver jewellery from minority ethnic groups of Karen and Mien from the North and Suay from the Northeast; silks from Buri Ram, Roi Et and Khon Kaen; and shadow puppets from the South. Artisans, many in their traditional costumes, will also demonstrate how they make their crafts.
Visitors can relax in a friendly, cultural setting and enjoy traditional Thai refreshments while listening to performances of gentle Thai music and watching the many demonstrations of craft production. They can also talk with the craftspeople about their work and their lives, while the ancient Kamthieng teakwood house will be open for tours.
A special feature this year will be the "Gantruem" music and dance group from Surin in lower Northeast Thailand, who bring a colourful and lively blend of Khmer and Isan traditions. In addition, the Tai Song Dam villagers will perform their folk dance and music.
For children, there will be craft activities and shows to kindle their interest in Thai culture and an artist will show them how to turn waste materials into art.
The entrance fee is 100 baht, including entry to a prize draw. For more information, call 02-676-0636.
