Book Recovery Gains Steam
Help is underway for literature damaged in recent flooding

As they stepped inside the residence of famed writer Suchart Sawatsri, a group of visitors were taken aback by the damp, murky smell that shrouded the place. The prominent muddy stain on the walls suggested the place had been inundated for weeks.
"It's a complete catastrophe," Suchart said softly as he welcomed the guests to his house in Pathum Thani two days after floodwaters had receded early December. The guests' mission was to rescue books damaged in the flooding.
Weeks earlier, floodwaters nearly two metres deep, forced his family and dogs to flee the place, leaving behind most of the printing materials in his warehouse-like library on the ground floor. Only 20% of his materials, art books and paintings could be moved to the second floor. Items that were submerged started decomposing, while those removed to the second floor developed moulds.
