No cause for celebration

A century ago, women in 17 countries observed the first International Women's Day. Their very first demands were the right to vote and to hold public office, and to an end to discrimination on the job.

However, these demands were not met without struggle. They were opposed by a well-organised and well-funded anti-suffrage movement which argued that most women really did not want the vote, and they were probably not qualified to exercise it anyway.
