Bringing a touch of Italy to Thailand

When a family tragedy thrust Chakrit Benedetti to the helm of the family business empire he was determined to prove himself; that done, he is now learning to mix pleasure with business

Chakrit Benedetti, or Max, always knew that one day he would take over Italasia, the multi-billion baht business founded by his Italian grandfather almost 50 years ago. However, he didn't expect that day to come when he was only 23 years old, after his father passed away from a heart attack in 1999. At the time Max had almost completed his MBA in marketing at Thunderbird School of Global Management in the US state of Arizona. Family members cancelled their plans to attend the ceremony due to the tragedy, and Max headed back to Thailand as soon as it was possible.

With his diploma in the mail, Max decided to take over as managing director of Italasia Electro and Italasia Trading right away.

''It was all very sudden. Everything happened so fast. I was determined to be able to do it, and I wanted people to see that I could do it,'' said Max, now 34, during our interview.
