Happiness in the Here and Now

In his talk "The Miracles of the Present Moment", Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh told the packed audience at Thammasat University during his recent visit, how mindful breathing, deep listening and loving speech are powerful sources of healing, self-understanding and compassion. His message on non-duality and inter-being, an important Buddhist teaching, also subtly reminds politically and ethnically divided Thailand of a Buddhist approach to peace while bringing Theravada and Mahayana Buddhism ever closer in the spirit of oneness. Here is the edited excerpt of the Zen master's talk:

When I was ordained as a novice, at age 16, my teacher gave me a book of 60 verses to learn by heart. Every novice had to learn them in order to practise mindfulness. The first verse, about waking up in the morning, is:

Waking up in the morning, I smile.

I know that there are 24 brand new hours for me to live.
