Lotus pondering leads to life change

A former young offender has turned around his life, and hopes to do the same for others like him

In the Youth Justice Centre, 17-year-old Somsak Chuchuy-kham sat idly by a small lotus pond; the images of the lotus conjured words of the Buddha on the four types of people in his mind.

"As I contemplated the lotus, I was wondering which type of lotus I was," Somsak recalled, looking up at the sky.

Apparently, he added, he was not the first type of person, who like unsubmerged lotus, was ready to bloom when touched by sunlight. Nor was he the second type, who like the lotus on the water's surface, would soon bloom.
