As Thai society moves with the times, so do its religious beliefs and practices
Ten years ago, some observers were voicing doubts about whether the increasing popularity of meditation retreats among the middle class would just be a passing fad. What we are witnessing today has shown that the meditation retreats are still growing and steadily expanding into all sectors of the middle class.
It is the same with other interests in dharma practices such as dharma talks and recitation of prayers. Dharma books have become in vogue and many of them have become best-sellers. Dharma CDs and other forms of dharma media have also become very popular.
All these factors point to a certainty that the current awakening of dharma interests among the middle class will remain a marked phenomenon in Thai Buddhism in the next decade.
