Re: The prospective In-laws

if you are marrying a a thai before knowing their family, you may be making a mistake. As they say the nut does'nt fall far from the tree or something like that, know their family, because that is knowing your future wife. If you don't trust her parents how can you trust her? As far as everyone else...

Re: Farangs Barred From Buying Thai Land

iced mercury did mention he bought and sold houses within Phuket. I did hear that Phuket had a special administrative status in selling land to foreigners before the Tsunami and during the Thaksin administration, which was put under review or revoked during the Military Tribunal and thus far ongoing...

Re: Is Farang an f word?

I speak nearly perfect Thai and must say in the Thai TV News they are using Khon Tarn Chart or Chao Tarn Chart, which is both correct. In the Neighbourhood they mostly call me by my (Thai) Nickname, but Visitors will be automatically called Farang. I self have no Problem with it, Thai can call me F...

Re: Is Farang an f word?

I already had my say on this, no need to re-hash my opinion.. well maybe just a little. Like a previous poster just mentioned no other word in english or thai is as convenient and descriptive as the word Falang. Westerner comes close in convenience, but I don't really see any reason to substitute th...

Re: Is Farang an f word?

I think eggmeng may think we are ganging up on him, but truthfully we are just trying to help. I think you need some good thai friends eggmeng to sit down and explain to you. As a few people already mentioned, and a few people missed it... Farang. Fa-ran-cet. (thai for France/french) or Fa-ran for s...

Re: Is Farang an f word?

Farang is a derivative of Francais used to describe everyone of european descent, a.k.a. caucasion, which includes all of europe, australia, white americans, canadians, people of spanish descent in s. america. etc. etc. If not that, you might be called kaek/indian, yun,yi-poon/japanese islam/arab , ...

Re: Farang and their seemingly paradoxical ways

Obama grew up in Hawaii where he was not degraded for being black. .... the word for farang in Hawaii is haole. The literal translation: Ha means breath of life. Ole means without. This term was used for all foreigners but as the races melded and people formed communities it evolved to refer to whi...

Re: Farang and their seemingly paradoxical ways

I think K**g Narai did what he had to do to keep the Europeans happy at that stage in Siam's history. He probably didn't have a whole lot of choice. I would not venture to say how this reflects on his character. But assuredly there were a lot of people who were unhappy about how a relatively select...

Re: Farang and their seemingly paradoxical ways

It is facile in the extreme to say that Constantine Faulken was executed simply because he was a foreigner. He had come to play a key role in a Thai K**gdom that was complicitous in terrible European exploitation of that part of Siam, and he grew immensely rich and powerful in the process. The guy ...
