Re: English Language in the Bangkok Post and Other Publications

I am an avid reader of the Bangkok Post's online edition. I plan to retire in Thailand in two years. My wife is Thai and we have a four-year old daughter. They live just outside of Buriram where we have a house, 20 acres of rice land, a new Isuzu pick-up, etc. I am now working as an English language...

Re: English Language in the Bangkok Post and Other Publications

Sean,

Talk about an ad hominem reply! Sean, you take the cake. Anything I could write now would seem defensive and, besides, I've wasted enough time already trying to get a serious and meaningful reply to my post. Let it end there, my friend.

Re: English Language in the Bangkok Post and Other Publications

Looks like this thread is running out of .....thread??? But I'd like to try just one more time to address the issue I started, which seems to have been lost in the back and forth chatter. No one has really addressed the substance of my post. Now, I don't want to beat a dead dog; yet, it seems to me ...

Re: English Language in the Bangkok Post and Other Publications

SJB, Sorry about mixing a bit of you with a lot of Sean. I know you both only by your writing, and I think Sean might actually be the one to take offense at mixing him up (at all) with you. Seriously, SJB..What about the substance of my post? I appreciate a good joke as well as anyone, but if this f...

Re: English Language in the Bangkok Post and Other Publications

Sean, Nice reply. Wish I had as much free time as you to write longer contributions to this forum. Maybe once I retire in Thailand in two years. I'll need to find something to keep myself occupied, even though the end result might be zilch. You seem obsessed with my use of the word "vet." ...

Re: English Language in the Bangkok Post and Other Publications

Sean, Thanks for your generous reply to my somewhat heated retort. Let's do share a cold one if we ever meet in "myuang Thai." I was also mixing you up a bit with stilljustbrowseing, and I apologize for that. Your last post did indeed kick up the level of discourse a notch; howeve...

Re: English Language in the Bangkok Post and Other Publications

Sean, Picky...picky...You seem to find joy in seeking out picayune errors (right about the "a" but, an obvious typo....and wrong about beginning sentences with "And" and wrong again about underlining. According to your logic, non of us "mere mortals" could aspire to wri...

Re: English Language in the Bangkok Post and Other Publications

If it's question of money Has one missed a word/letter here during one's critisism of english writing? "let he who is without sin cast the first stone"  On a more serious note, I do agree with you, I have seen some seriously bad texts written in "english" and could...

Re: English Language in the Bangkok Post and Other Publications

Sean,
"Native speakers" by definition means those whose mother tongue is English. I am not sure who you are referring to as "native speakers."

English Language in the Bangkok Post and Other Publications

The Bangkok Post claims to be "The World's Window to Thailand." As such, one would assume that the Post's website would want to put its best face forward and limit any major errors in the English language. However, time and again one finds major errors in articles in the new (and old) onli...
