Re: Is Farang an f word?

For me, "farang" in Thailand is the equivalent of "gringo" in Mexico, ...... sorry, there is no such thing as "for me, it's the equivalent of......" Something is or isn't. Nothing more nothing less. Sorry Mr Math teacher : for me, "5" is the equivalent of a &...

Re: Is Farang an f word?

I'm Thai. Dont be serious! i accept that some bad Thais use the word " Farang" for insulting. i'm sory about that! However, I insist that most of us (Thais) dont mean any offense. it just a word referring to Caucasian foreigners. I believe that most of uneducated Thais or those who live i...

Re: Is Farang an f word?

And yes, it is often used in a derogatory manner. What's wrong with "Please drive this man/tourist/ passenger/ guest to the airport". When in doubt why not use MAN, or WOMAN or MISS OR MISTER? Too difficult? 1. often used in a derogatory manner : so NOT always.. And if you hear it being u...

Re: Is Farang an f word?

I guess my understanding of cultural sensitivity must be different from Drake and Thai_Thai. And very different of mine also... About looking/staring : don't worry... walk around in Paragon and nobody will stare at you because of you being farang. The other way around : most farang men also stare o...

Re: Is Farang an f word?

The Thai word "farang" can be neutral or can derogatory, depending on usage. Example one: nang sue pasaa farang (The book is written in a western language). Not derogatory. However, the word is annoying for its lack of description. German is not English, English is not French, French is n...

Re: Is Farang an f word?

The "F" word is a sticky problem. by the F word you mean "farang" I presume ? It IS a sticky problem indeed : the problem is that SOME farang, for whatever reason I can't possibly comprehend, but for which I have NEVER heard any half-decent explanation, start to IMAGINE that it ...

Re: Is Farang an f word?

But why would anyone need to turn to their friends and state the obvious. If I see a Chinese person walking the streets of London, I don't turn to my friends and say hey guys look there's a China man! Why would I care for the reason why some people state the obvious. And you may not turn your head ...

Re: Is Farang an f word?

Thai people use this term to group some 20 or so nationalities who speak 15 or so different languages and have 15 or so different cultures. whether this is due to lack of education and ignorance, or racism is debatable. But non the less it is still WRONG and very non-understanding of other people's...

Re: Is Farang an f word?

I too have been offended by the use of farang, but only occasionally. sometimes it is very evident that a whole lot of prejudice is being loaded on to me with the use of this word./.../ so, yes i accept that regular folks will say farang, because its colloquial (ie. common) and not be surprised tha...

Re: Is Farang an f word?

I can't imagine that a foreigner would come to lecture me about some word in my language, while that same foreigner can hardly (or not even) write his name in my alpabet, isn't capable of having a half-decent conversation about anything except about some very superficial topics, and jumbles up all ...
