Re: Farang cannot know Thai-ness

[quote="Urbanaguy" So I am also heartsick that Thailand has now reverted to being just another "banana republic," with strutting generals and all the rest. I guess if we want a taste of freedom on our next trip to that region, we will have to go to Burma.[/quote] Sorry, but you o...

Re: Double pricing system in Thailand

Double Pricing is bad, and yes it is biting the hand that feeds you. When I went to Vietnam last March everybody paid the same price. There was no price playing ( At least to my knowledge ). Thailand is a great country ,and has lots to offer, but other South East Asian nations are catching up, and ...

Re: Devalue Thailand baht

Partner up with China adamt? If you sup with the devil, use a long spoon. It is not so much the strength of the ThB. but rather the weakness of the fiat currencies. This thread began 5 years ago but only this year have things begun to reverse with any gusto but I'm afraid that unless Thailand sorts ...

Re: Why do ONLY foreigners get special promotion?

\\ ////. I didn't know that ZxMx. Interesting. Can't hurt to check it out. Just a little story. I took my Thai wife to Vientaine for a bit of shopping. She did the shopping. When she came back, she said that she was sure she had been cheated. "Welcome to the world of foreigners", I replied...

Re: Is Farang an f word?

I believe that the word 'farang' is derived from the Arabic word 'ferenghi' which means free in the sense that they do not submit to the will of allah. Batu Ferenghi on the Malaysian island of Penang means free man's beach for instance. So, khon Thai, I am proud to be a 'farang'. Thank you.

Re: Farang cannot know Thai-ness

My Thai wife's friends won't let me sit with them because I speak reasonable Thai. Wonder why? Thainess perhaps. If it is not fit to be said, then don't say it. Something else for Thais to understand about most western 'falangs'.

Re: Farang cannot know Thai-ness

Yes chmiroau, same problem different wife. They do not seem to learn from past experience. Take my blocked drain for example. Five visits by the Thai 'plumber' resulted in exactly the same thing being done even though it was obvious that it wasn't fixing the problem. In the end I did it myself. (It ...

Re: Thailand so beautiful but so deadly

Maybe hawaiiman. Yes, Thailand is a great place to live if you happen to be a 'farang' or a fully paid up member of the 'phoo yaai' but do you never stop to think about the lives of the 'phoo lek'. The only things that I can see as deadly are the complete lack of discipline on Thailands roads (and p...

Re: Is Farang an f word?

Many kids in my wife's village shout 'Yak" and run off crying when I appear. Suppose I am to them. Not worried what they call me personally. 'Sticks and stones may break my bones but names will never hurt me.'
