Am I missing something here? Red vs PM

Am I missing something here? Red vs PM

It seems like the Red shirts have snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. They had gotten concessions on virtually everything they wanted. All they were supposedly waiting for was the date for the PM to dissolve parliament to go home. Then in their hour of victory they added new conditions that were impossible for the other side to meet.

An impartial observer would see that the red shirts having achieved a moral victory got greedy and overreached and in the process lost whatever moral standing they had. Their moral standing was based on support for the democratic process, and trying to get the deputy prime minister arrested for whatever basically said we dont really care about the democratic process as long as we get the results we like.

As I said again am I missing something?

Yes this is how it seems to me too. I'm a Canadian living in Vancouver with my Thai partner. We have been following the situation. He tells me that in the Thai news he is reading, there is a split in the Red shirt ranks. Two of the three leaders want to settle, but the third one, the general with the weapons, the one who was shot today, does not.

Too bad. It seems to me that it should have ended in victory for the red shirts. A mostly non-violent demonstration that achieved some goals they could take back to their supporters. Now they seem to be stuck in a corner of their own making.

By the way, I've found the best coverage in English to be on the Al Jazeera website.

Cheers,
Bruce from Vancouver

Here where I work in Ubon Ratchathani, the red shirts have blocked main bridges across the Mun river separating the city and its main surburb, Warin Chamrab. The area around the Saladaeng (governors place etc) is full of red shirts. Last night they riddled two branches of the Bangkok Bank with bullets.

At 9 am my maid rings me up at work and informs me that she is off to give support to the red shirts and hangs up the phone.

I 'm not sure that she will at home when I get back at 5 pm. She may have to find a new job.

My son works for Reuters in Bangkok and bought a condo next to the Four Seasons hotel on Rachadamri Road two months ago. 20 minutes walk through the park to work. Before moving in he hired tradesmen to renovate the place. They had just started tiling the floor when the red shirts blocked the area off 7 weeks ago. The tradesmen can't get their van in with materials. So my son has to continue renting about 1 hour away from work.

I believe that it is going to be a bloody end and the reds upcountry will go on a rampage.
