Should school uniforms be discontinued?

Should school uniforms be discontinued?

In my opinion, Thailand should ditch those uniforms, and use that money to pay Thai teachers fairly.
What is more important?

Paying your educators fairly.
(or)
School uniforms

Would you rather have your own children be taught by fairly paid, happier teachers, or have your kids "look disciplined with school uniforms."

In my opinion, this is an absolute no brainer.
What do you think?

ABSOLUTELY NEVER!

The respect that Thai students have (mostly) for their teachers has foundations in the retention of the uniforms, and to follow the mistakes of western societies (barbaric anarchies) would reduce the role of the teacher to lesser than that of the school toilet cleaner.

Crikey! Next thing you'll be asking that teachers turn up for work in boardshorts, thongs and singlets! Heavens above!

Big Jay, I do agree with you. Pay the teachers better so they may do their jobs better or at least take their jobs more seriously.

Sean does not agree, and I can not agree with his point. I never had to wear a uniform in my life, does not mean, that I never showed respect in my life. I respected my teachers as what they were, educators. I think it is wrong to respect somebody because of what he wears.

School is not the army and uniforms belong to the armed forces, police, firefighters and so on.

Students should be grown up as individuals, not as part of a uniformed system.

The other day, we had to go for passport run to Khon Kaen. Things done we sat outside the shopping mall for a drink. When I saw, some of the students with their mini skirts and almost transparent blouses, I told my wife, that I would never allow our daughter to walk around like that.

So, Big Jay, put me down for increase of teachers salary. I am in with 100 Bath.

They also require uniforms to work behind a Macdonald's counter.

That's what you want, then I hope you get what you wish for.

IN ANOTHER COUNTRY!

Look Sean, there is an interesting topic in here talking about education. Not necessarily my posts, knowing you, you will probably not agree with my points. But Twilight Zone makes some very good points. Thai politics, topic, I knew it was coming.

Where has Twilight Zone made any post in this thread?

Back on-topic, your admission that you have personally never worn a uniform in your life does help the reader understand why you may prefer not to wear the standard uniform when you go to school. However, it seems rather unrelated to the monthly salaries of teachers. All I can gather from the OP's suggestion is that he/she wants to see the parents of school students spend the money that they currently spend on uniforms on school fees so that the schools make more profit and ergo pay more to their staff.

Don't take it so personally. Just answer this question:

How will NO UNIFORMs help to put more money in the teachers' pockets?

I'm all for uniforms !!!
and
think uniforms are a good ideal in a way that it makes everyone look the same. Especially to those family that cant afford to buy expensive clothes, this helps their child not feel out of place, because nowadays people will always judge you by the way you dress.

School should not be a competition between the haves and have nots. Having an excess of money does NOT make one a better person and by making students dress alike class divisions may not seem as obvious. Individuality can be expressed in more creative ways such as art, music, drama, math science, etc. A child should be encouraged to develop worthwhile inner qualities not depend on shallow surface adornments to set them apart.

Should school uniforms…

Sean, well, could it be, that maybe BigJay thought same as I did, that the uniforms are handed out by the schools? I know by now that it is not the case and everyone has to buy their own uniforms.

So, I guess that my theory, safe money in uniforms and invest that money in better salaries, does not really work anymore. Still I do not like uniforms for students and I even like teachers in uniforms less.

SweetPea, welcome to the forum.

Well, your points may make sense. Still I think that it is not a solution. There will always be differences between more and less wealthy students. Mobile phones for an instance, here in Thailand.

So, you are not solving the problem putting kids in uniform, but educating them, that there are other values as well in life, not just the looks. You say; “nowadays people will always judge you by the way you dress.”

Well, I personaly feel pity for the people you mention. I want my kids to judge people for what or how they are and not for what they wear. And that starts with giving them a good education and a lot of love from the first day in their lives. Not making them just an other number in a uniformed system.

For the record, us teachers have to buy our own uniforms too, but we get a bit of leeway on the colours of the ties and trousers (don't wear black trousers in blackboard classrooms or you get called Mr Snowman for all the chalk dust that winds up all over your pants), and we can opt for various light shades of shirt, providing it's light colours and good leather shoes, of course.
