The university admission system is ineffectual in screening students, unacceptable to many faculties and troublesome for students, says Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva, calling for an overhaul.
Speaking to the Council of University Rectors of Thailand, he said the admission system was still causing problems even though it had been changed several times. "If we let the selection system continue as it does today, the system will end in crisis."
One sign of crisis was research finding that many students drop out of their engineering and science faculties because they are not academically capable enough to be there.
This showed examinations under the admission system were ineffective in selecting qualified students.
Another sign of crisis was the increasing number of faculties resorting to direct enrolment.
That caused a heavier burden on students who must pay more and undergo more examinations.
