Point out that if he did not know that 9X9=81 he could say 3X9=27 three times then do 3X27, 3X20=60 3X7=21, 60+21=81
all mental aritmetic involving multiplying by 3 at each step and with a final addition.

Once the logic is understood it can be applied to more complex numbers.

Maths has two main divisions, Pure and Applied. Applied Maths is simply physics without the practicals :lol:
As a physics teacher I became accustomed to teaching maths as part of my lessons simply because the Maths Department was not up to the job.
Currently many young "science" teachers seem to lack both Physics and Maths :( Many are biology teachers teaching physics from the book.
