recording from the TV for private viewing and not for commercial distribution is allowed, I think.

FYI;

you need a special licence to import machines to clone CDs from the Ministry of Commerce

ALEX1 You also need to apply for a so called TIP Code that shows who clones what day by the same ministry. They
perform a random check very carefully only by the ones cloning legally and paying tax too, following the law, piracy does not exist, this vendors will not be checked, so last year about 100 shops selling legally CD,VCD need to close down because of competition of Vendors selling pirated CD, VCD. and not pay Tax eather.

People will continue to buy counterfeit goods as long as it stays cheap. Patpong is famous for sex, gay, and counterfeit, which has attracting tourist for many years. Even though the counterfeit is illegal but it has been a bloodline for those who make a living selling those items. It has created social & economical for Thailand for many decade. As the whole world in crisis many business has been closed down and people will need jobs to stay survive. Now Ahbisit decided to get rid their way of life and living. I know this is almost like double edge situation one is good reason for getting rid of illegal selling of counterfeit good but on the downside it will take people livelihood away from them at the time that they need to make a living. Does he think before he made this decision or there is another pressure from the outside? But there always has been pressure from outside for many years already. Why does he choose to act now? If this decision came from within I think it a bad timing for him to act and very stupid of him for making this plan now. He has implement any plans good enough to stimulate our economy and now he even make it more difficult for people to make a living. Does he consider any plan of getting rid of prostitution in Thailand too? I would love to see how people would react on this decision. Thailand like many another countries has it own problems if we continue to depend on tourism as a major source of income then we going to have this kind of problem. We must have another source of income for our people could have stable income apart from export, which very little compare with another countries.
logically we should allow theft & robbery, otherwise we would take away 'livelihood' from thieves & robbers.
no offence intended, we LOVE pirates...

I agree 100% but you forgot to mention Gunmen too.

The fine is not less than 20 000B and not to exeed 90 000B for the vendor (some courts in Bangkok order a fine against the law 5 000B only)

If there isn’t a demand or consumers there will not be a supply simple as that. If the tourist doesn’t buy it then there will be no selling those items of counterfeit goods anywhere in the world that including Thailand too.

I SHOULD RECOMMEND; Open Your eys when travelling all over Thailand, You will learn, every where You will see counterfied
items, the consumers are Thais, the tourist spots are only a small percentage of the sales. And the most worse in Thailand
is, the Thais damage its own economy by counterfeing its own products. Nowadays there are more vendors selling pirated
DVDs then regular stores, showing its items openly and You can order by catalog. The sales of the producers drop 80% already, some producers shot down already. Do You find this anywhere in the world?

May I suggest the current crack-down has something to do with wanting to borrow 800billion bht.?
The reason I say this is because the government will probably go to the USA and/or Europe for the loan. The same two groups whose products are being pirated the most? (just a thought)

Malaysia is the number 1 in the world for fake credit cards and DVD piracy. The Chinese comes a close second to M'sia. Thailand's DVD piracy is still in its infancy.

In M'sia, the locals no longer risks their lifes hawking DVDs. Now, they hire illegal chinese nationals to do the hawking on their behalf.

But they operate differently, they show you a book of titles and sleeves, you pick the one you want and a runner gets sent off to return in 5 mins with the DVD. The DVDs are stored in a place away from the selling area.

Highly uneffective. The way we sell pirated DVD in Malaysia now is to have these people carry a big bag full of DVDs and go round to each table in a restaurant and let the patrons choose it there and then. First class customer service :D

It is always the illegal immigrants doing it. So if they get caught by the authorities, they will be sent back to their home country at the government's expense.
