Questioning the Justice of Chulalongkorn University

Postby cal1207 on Thu May 21, 2009 5:42 pm

Yes, I am a 17-year old teenager.
Yes, I am speaking from a biased point of view.
Yes, I am speaking as a third person.
Yes, I know what fraud is and how it works.
And yes, I believe I just witnessed a big scam today.

Chulalongkorn University has a tradition of holding its own entrance exams like the CU-TEP and the CU-AAT, with these, it has attracted thousands of students every year who wishes to enter one of the best universities in Thailand. Normally, the test would sum up to an amount close to 800 baht covering areas of English reading and mathematics. However, the test that happened on May 17th, 2009, prices increased to 2000 baht under the reason of it being a "special round". For most if not all the students, a slight increase in the price would not really be that big of an obstacle for their pursuit of a nice career in the future, so the amount of test-takers did not decrease by any amount significant. Now is when I accuse them of cheating off money of students. The test proctors required the students to dress in an appropriate manner to this "special round" wherein pants and skirts should be beyond knee length and slippers are prohibited. If warnings were given out on the entrance tickets and is obvious for people to see, then nothing would be wrong. However, the warnings for the test-takers were so hidden and obscured that the possibility of seeing it or even knowing of it would be fairly minimal. Many test-takers have been shocked on test day for in previous occasions, no such requirement was established and some even said they wore shorter pants before and were in no form of trouble. The dress code was only written on the Chulalongkorn website (http://www.atc.chula.ac.th/pdf/M_online.pdf), and for international or non-Thai citizens, the dress code was only written in Thai and was not found on the English webpage for Chulalongkorn University (http://www.atc.chula.ac.th/pdf/CU-AAT_new.pdf). More than ten test-takers were asked to leave due to their lack of notice. From my point of view, this is extremely unfair. The lack of warning made these students lose their time and 2,000 baht. I cannot help but question whether this sudden act of inflation and an abrupt set of new rules were a part of any financial scheme. Please check in on this for me and many other unnotified students so that we do not misunderstand a usual process if that is so.

I once again admit that I am speaking on behalf of my close friends, and please forgive my vulgar accusations if and only if I'm wrong.

I have been trying to send emails to inform the Bangkok Post, but I do not use Microsoft Outlook and therefore had a hard time contacting anyone that could be helpful of this situation

appears to be a matter of misunderstanding

I tried both email and outlook, the outlook gave me no replies and hotmail told me the sending process failed... twice.
I hope its just a mere misunderstanding as well, but for my friends weren't the only one that were un-notified, I don't think the number of misinformed students define this as an accident. I'm not quite sure of how many were told to leave the testing center, when I get a better idea, I will post it soon.

Sulasno,

Hmpf, not bad. Assuring I do not to have to work too hard - thanks!

I was going to provide the same as I read her post, as I figure it is a matter that deserves a basic look into. But I generally agree with you, doesn't sound like a scandal to me. Nevertheless, good luck to you Cal and your friends.

Sulasno,

Hmmm. Don't know for sure, seems to be a '301 redirect' to the .com in terms of HTTP (web) access. Mail protocol is something else entirely though of course. My sugggestion would to be safe and CC the message to .com address as well.

As said, I am a comments/forum moderator, not a techie admin. I fully qualified to do that - they just haven't given me the magic access codes, mandate or paygrade adjustment I would require to tweak the tech stuff...
