However the system of setting up checkpoints has in past proved friutless and will continue to do so. Also the fact that garages are not allowed to sell petrol, is also mentioned as they will be penalised severely if they do so.
BUT what about the Mom and Pop stores that sell Alcohol/Sweets/Petrol in 20-30 baht bottles, they are not only alowed to do so, but do so without any of the legal niceties that garages have to comply with.
WHEN WILL THE AUTHORITIES CLAMP DOWN ON THESE STORES THAT ALLOW ( IN THE MAIN ) MOTORCYCLES TO NOT ONLY BUY DRINK BUT ALSO BUY PETROL.
As I understand it the vast majority of deaths incurred are motorcyclists, therefore it stands to reason that the ease of access to petrol and Alcohol should be dealt with . garages cannot sell alcohol, but down the road a small store can sell both with no licences and probably no safeguards for the motorist as well.
IF this Government was really serious about Cutting the Road death toll, they would target not only these shops but the appalling state of the driving professionals , by that I mean those bus/lorry and other large vehicle drivers who snub their noses at the law on a daily basis.
