World's second largest retailer is leaving Thailand ?

Postby david on Sun Jul 11, 2010 12:11 am

Central Retail Corp could be in the running to take over Carrefour's hypermarket business in Thailand, estimated to be worth 16.2 billion baht as the French retailer is seeking to dispose of its Southeast Asia assets.

Just days after speculation emerged that Carrefour planned to sell up and leave Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia, the world's second-largest retailer on Friday July 9 insisted it would keep its stores and indeed expand in the latter two markets.

Yes, no, for sure maybe!!

Are you saying the French are pushing out the street vendors? Thai street vendors?

I'm not clear when you say 'also run or own Tesco'??

Would you kindly explain more clearly?

I think Tesco is British owned. Carrefour is just being strategic. Afterall, their market share in Thailand and in Malaysia and Singapore are in a low single digit. Carrefour ROI in these countries are paltry and made lots of sense to re-adust their business plan and perhaps re-direct to China. Although big stores affects the Mon & Pop businesses, we must also think of their multiplier effects they can bring to any locality thru employments, spill overs vendors, suppliers etc thus adding much needed revenues to the local amphurs. With high transportation costs and traffic, Mum & Pop does serve a niche market. I see most Mom & Pop goes to Big Stores to buy their suppliers. Big stores served that function well too. :ugeek:

Thai mom and pop shop owners and nationalists can celebrate!! They should at least splurge on a departing bottle of bubbly at Carrefour!!

Still no complaints about Seven/Eleven! Oh, forgot, their run by a Thai outfit!!

No complaints heard about Big C either. Run by another Thai outfit, Central Group
