I think that Thai family law is so different to ours.
I know a Thai lady and her 24 yr old daughter who was happily living as husband and wifewith the girls father for 20 years. The man had an accident and became brain damaged,he now lives with the monks who care for him, they owned a small farm at Mukdaharn. The mans brother and wife just came and kicked the woman and her daughter out and took over the farm.
There is nothing that they can legally do about it ! Because his next of kin gets it all

Emily - I never said every mixed relationship was load of bollocks.
Wake up to yourself girl - before it's too late.
I said a lot of those relationship are - and I'm in one. Be well-warned : I was n't.
I know of some that are happily together, after well over a decade.
But for everyone of those, there' s many more where it was just a Thai scam.
Thailand's anti-foreigner laws make this an easy scam.
But if you're as rich as Mr. Thaksin, or Singapore, you can sell / buy best parts of the country - tax-free. So if you're as rich as Mr. Thaksin / Singapore - then Emily my dear, don't worry - be happy.
Please go ahead my dear : I look forward to hearing your sob-story, five years hence.

Well, Aussie Dave. If his greedy brother took the farm and she did not try to fight it, then she is deserving it. Thailand does have old common laws and modern laws. She could claim as his common-law-wife and bring along witnesses to the court. At least, she will receive partial property. Why is she not taking care of him? If he is still living in the house and she is still caring for him, than it would make it easier for her to claim the property. Since he is still alive and living with a monk, his brother could claim it. But the question is still remian about who is are having the legal guardian over this man. If his brother took the property, than he is responsible for his ill brother. It is a question for the court and the judge to decide. Property transfer in Thailand is not as easy as in Western countries. I would think the title is still in the name of the ill brother.

Rooster 14th march..............You obviously dont understand. They lived together for over twenty years but never married, so how can she claim to be his common law wife? She has tried unsuccessfully getting the help of a lawyer. Due to his injuries and her lack of money she cannot look after him and at times he becomes violent. What else do you suggest!
The brother moved into the house , got him to sign it over then put him with the monks. He had brain injuries and neither recognises his daughter or her mother.

If he signed the document over to his brother, than it will be hard to fight in the court. But the common-law-wife law still protect her if 1. she is the house registry 2. she and her lawyer will have to produce witnesses that they have been living together for that period of time 3. the lawyer will have to prove that he is not in his right-mind when he signed over the property.

Hi Emily!

I'm in the same situation as you and I sympathise with your difficulties to get accurate information. I have the same problem.

I'm getting married next week and I'm also pregnant with my first baby. If I find any information that would be useful for you, I'll let you know. If you do the same maybe we can figure it out between us!

At last some information on english woman wanting to marry thai man or I should rephrase that "thinking about" I also meet a thai man from Isaan, this was about a year and half ago now and seven visits with him later I feel as though we maybe getting somewhere in our relationship. But there are things if I do go ahead I have to accept like most thai men he drinks and Im the one who usually pays for it. This is the biggest downfall, because whatever way I look at it, the relationship is not equal. So what am I getting out of it, for me the adventure of being with this man is diffirent, but I am also well aware of what he is getting out of it, "A better life" .

Emily, I am very torn between loving this man and seeing things for what they really are, thats not to say our relationship may not work. My thai boyfriend is 30 and I am 37, What I am doing is taking it slowly.

He does not speak english, I speak thai, but not fluently yet. The way I believe thai culture is that a man pays for woman traditionally but how often this really happens with thai men of a lower class status i think is not much. There have been some changes in Thai visas as of oct 2006 also which im interested to find out as I believe it to be you can now only stay thailand for 3 months before you have to leave for 3 months out of thailand before you can enter again.

Sorry this is long winded but I am also wanting to know about marrying a thai and share some of my experience with you emily
