I really like the idea of looking in a bookshop for a wife.....yeah I just imagine the scenario 8 hour stints in Bookazine or Asia Books.....loads of wives to be had....get real please!
We know most guys meet their wives in bars, but it's funny whenever this topic comes up everyone met their wife in a bookshop or at university lol.

Yeah, and is perfectly ok to marry a western girl that you met in a western bar even though the limiting factor on meeting a girl in a bar in the west is how nice of a car you drove to the bar.

I think a lot of these posts miss the point about Thailand in general. I do not claim to have an intimate knowledge of Thai morality but can only base my opinion on what I see and experience living here.
Walk down Sukhumvit in the Asoke / Soi 4 strip on any night (haven't been up there in about 4 months but I suppose it is still the same) and you will see any number of girls "freelancing" on the street. A lot of these are not "bar girls" but simple working girls with normal jobs or uni students trying to make some "disco money" to go out and have fun with their friends. If you are on 6,000 Baht a month there is not a lot left for "fun" after food, rent, money sent home etc so a once a Month visit there puts a bit extra in you pocket. If you met one of these girls in their day job and fell in love with her do you think that the realtionship has any better chance of success than if you picked her up on the street?

I work with a number of younger Thai girls in my office and in general I perceive that they are quite shy and have "good middle class" morals (to coin a phrase) but these girls are also , in general) on less than 10,000 Baht a Month and struggle to make ends meet. One of the girls turned up one day with a new toy doll, one of the very trendy and expensive ones that are sold in places like Central. She paid 20,000 Baht for it! No questions asked by anyone in the office.

Don't forget Thailand has never had Western morals forced on it through colonisation. There was no Queen Victoria here!
