As for learning Thai there are many "Learn Thai" CD's Books etc but these wont be any use without having some speaking practice with a native speaker especally as Thai is a tonal linguage they can correct even if you sometimes dont notice the difference in the corrected tones!

Dont be afraid to try it Thais just like any other culture will take any thing you say with a pinch of salt just remember to be polite!

hi!!
i'm learning thai now in bangkok, when i started my thai freinds recomend me to start form the botom, learn the alphabet, and the thai vocals, practice to read in thai and write in thai with little kids books. After u can do that everythng is faster and more correct in pronuntation and you will remember the meanings of the words faster!!

Best Regards

Yeah Kant, its great that when in Thailand you can just speak a few simple phrases, and i,m sure that most Thai,s appreicate that you have taken the trouble to learn a few of them, there also also some excellent little pocket sized Thai phrase books on the market complete with how to pronounce the words, problem is, as no doubt you are well aware is the different dialect,s which i suppose is the same the world over, here in my little enclave they speak Khamen not Thai , sometimes with a bit of Lao thrown in for good measure, myself i have no problem with this and many in my village have a good laugh at me trying to get my mouth round some words, of which i am not in the least bit offended , after all, "when in Rome".

I agree with Gonzo in his approach to learn Thai for the beginner. That's is how native Thais are being taught in school.

the best way to learn any language, but particularly a tonal language, such as the Thai language - is the same way we learn to speak our own native language as children - through varied experiences using all of our senses, especially listening, watching and interacting.

I came across a Thai language school on Koh Lanta who have developed their courses after studying the latest in the educational science - so even as adults we learn in the same way we did as children - not with vocabulary lists, or memorising words, but through role play, imitating, computer games, films, and sound files. Any course material which provides such a varied approach would be the most effective.
