Is it safe to visit?
Re: Is it safe to visit?
The majority of Thais are honest, lovely people and well worth getting to know. But, as with other countries, there is an element of corruption that is shall we say 'less hidden here' than in other countries.
BTW I live here and have done continuosly for 7 years without problems and I live near the center of Bangkok.
I hope this helps.

I want to visit Thailand this year. I thought April for songkam festival or in July when it is not so hot. I visited last year and enjoyed Bangkok and the river kwai and made some friends, now I want to travel around Thailand some more. I read Cheng mai is a good place for songkam and about many old ruined temples in the north and north east. Is it safe to travel around now? especially the north part. My Thai friends want to meet me again and i would love to visit more places with them. Is it safe for me? Is it safe for them to travel outside Bangkok if they are not in the red team?
My feeling is Thailand is a fairly safe place to visit and travel regardless of the current political situation. There is chance of some flair ups here and there, but overall the chances of one getting caught up in the conflict, is I believe slim.
It might be a good idea to check periodically, the website of your country for warnings about Thailand, but if you come for a visit, keep abreast of developments in the newspapers while your here, and you should be ok.
Perhaps others don't feel that way. You have to make the choice yourself and perhaps accept that plans you make might change because of the unrest.
Of course lately, things seem to be heating up, but these hot and cold periods have been occurring for the last several years and I'm not aware of any foreigners being injured.

NONE of 26 security cameras in Patong work, the police chief of Region 8, Major General Pithak Jarusombat, told a gathering of Phuket's community administrators and interest groups today.
The conference of about 400 representatives from various groups, including volunteer police, tuk-tuk drivers, taxi drivers and local communities, was an initiative of the new Kathu/Patong police superintendent, Colonel Arayapan Pukbuakao.
While the potential for terrorist activities was part of the seminar in an overcrowded room at Patong Hospital, the main thrust was on the continuing safety of residents and tourists.
Visitors may come to Phuket because of good beaches and good weather, Major General Pithak said, but the prime reason was because the island was considered a safe destination.
And he admitted that the island's police force of 1100 officers was inadequate for Phuket's population.
As a result, Phuket needed the support of the governor's ''1000 eyes of the pineapple'' and other volunteer groups, along with local administrators.
To contract for security cameras that do not work, Major General Pithak said, was a failure to understand the community's needs
