Children born in thailand refugee camps?

Postby Khun on Sun Aug 05, 2012 5:17 am

Hi,

I was born in a Thailand refugee camp in 1990. My mother lost my birth certificate, and I am wondering how can I get a copy of it. I know in Thailand you usually go to the local office where you registered your child's birth, but since I was born in a refugee camp does it work the same way? Any information about this matter will be helpful. Thank you in advance for your time and help.

Have you checked with the municipal authority of the area you were born in?

You could contact UNHCR (United Nations High Commission for Refugees) in Bangkok and see if they know which authority would have recorded your birth in the refugee camp. Since your mother has had a birth certificate it must be recorded
somwhere.Do a search for UNHCR Bangkok on the internet-you can always send them an e-mail.

Best of luck with your search.

Dear Khun,
I used to worked for both the UNHCR (United Nations High Commission for Refugees), and the Thai Administration and people called them “Bor Kor” where the Thai Ministry of Interior or Thai people called it “Krasuang Mahathai. Website: www.moi.go.th. There’re a few ways you can try to access those records. One – ask your mom to see which refugee camp you were born. I assumed you are Laotian; most Laotian refugees came from the (NAPHO) refugee camp. Most Hill tribes Refugees like the Hmong, Mien came from (BAN VINAI, CHIENGKHAM). You’ll need the name of the refugee camp when you try to access for your record. Secondly – the UNHCR is very with record keeping, and I bet you can stop by or write the UNHCR Chief in Bangkok and you should be able to get copy of your record. Again, it depends what refugee camp you came from. You’ll need to let them know…and the UN goes by either your family’s old identification number such as “BV1234567, or CA234567, or NP so on.

Good luck…
