no any complicated reason...just an easy term and everybody understand
well its great that farang is just an easy term for you and everybody to understand but so is the term Asian which like farang is not a slang word and used in many situations is not racist but if I were to constantly refer to you as an asian knowing full well that you are thai believe me after a few days you would understand why many of us whiteys(farang) find the word farang highly offensive.

Can we please go on with our lives, being called Farang or not?

As long as BKK Post leave this red herring in place and allowing new posts, you are asking for the impossible.
I thought we had settled this thing over a year ago, at least trice.
Sure as the sun don't shine onto the dark side at night, some dumb schmuck comes along months after, sees the topic, and has got to kick this 55 gallons bucket of worms over and spleens mightily about something they know nothing about before even reading more than two lines in to the thread.
Then someone will have to try to make the unwilling lame walks and the brainless thinks.
The next thing you know it's grown another six pages.
For all we know, it's regularly trolled !

Perhaps those whom give it expeditious and deeper thought have more on their minds than the traditional tag of being referred to as Farang. Giving it far too much thought and attaching a quality of seriousness to their perceptions of cultural differences. The fairer examination that there are differences, and life situations where an invented homogenous harmony are clearly of a fanciful bent.
Thinking too much is more a detriment than advantageous.

Farang... to me was like saying "My White Son..." has come home....
Matters not that I have Thai wife, matters most is that I kept my word. I promised I would come back. Back to the friends who accepted me for being me. Somehow along the way I gained a Thai Wife (educated), every day I thank the lord above for giving me the insight to Love and Cherish her these years, and to show my friends where my Jai... truely was! Back to thank them for the opportunity to survive the Vietnam War, back to the ones who truely protected me!
