The wondrous journey of Oris RAID
Between 1920 and 1931, French car manufacturers’ Citroën and Renault sent their cars on long test journeys to prove the reliability and quality of their models. This test was called a RAID. In the world of historical rallies the term has now become synonymous with long distance travel, in particular with classic cars. Today, RAID means fast, long distance runs from Switzerland to Paris, the capital of France, with classic motorcars.
The idea of the RAID was revived more than 20 years ago in Basel, Switzerland, by H. A. Bichsel who wanted to create an event which would showcase magnificent vintage cars, whilst testing their durability and the abilities of their drivers and navigators.
The RAID SUISSE-PARIS covers around 1000 kms on minor routes. The drivers cover long distances in short spaces of time in a variety of cars which were produced before 1975. Every year on a Thursday in August at 12.30 pm the drivers promptly leave Basel for Paris, arriving in the French capital three days later.
These three days on the road test the teams on their ability to follow the correct route, to stick to strict time limits and to carry out various special exercises. However, the biggest test is that of the old cars and their ability to withstand the demands of the challenging rally.
In 2010, Oris joined forces with the RAID organization and became the official timekeeper of the 20th RAID SUISSE-PARIS and the first AsianRAID.
To celebrate this unique collaboration, Oris launched the RAID Chronograph Limited Edition, which encompasses a dial design inspired by the dashboard of the winning car from the 2009 RAID SUISSE-Paris rally, a Jaguar XK120, 1952.
In 2011, two new distinctive limited edition watches were introduced; the Oris RAID 2011 Chronograph Edition and Oris RAID 2011 Alarm Edition. Each beautifully crafted, intricate timepiece pays homage to the honourable winner of the RAID 2010: the prestigious Austin-Healey 100M, 1953.
The Oris RAID 2012 Chronograph Limited Edition is the latest addition to Oris’ range of RAID watches significantly influenced by the winning cars of the RAID SUISSE-PARIS.
Featuring the innovative design elements of the winner of the 2011 rallye, a Cadillac Series 62 Coupé from 1942, the exclusive ORIS RAID model is the epitome of classic design.
