Krabi Adventure Race Sheraton Krabi Trophy 2012
Sheraton Krabi Beach Resort was recently the scene of the 1st "Krabi Adventure Race Sheraton Krabi Trophy 2012" bringing the spectacular and fast growing sport of Adventure Racing to the South of Thailand.
Krabi, November 3rd - The opening ceremony was presided by Mr. Prasit Osathanont, Krabi Governor. Mr. Chatchawan Pankudrua, General Manager of Sheraton Krabi Beach Resort, Mrs. Wiyada Srirangkool, Director of TAT of Krabi Branch and Ms. Naruemol Hemsoras, Thai Smile were present amongst the honored guests.
The race started with a 15 km section of rolling off-road mountain biking, some were quite steep, but provided spectacular views at all times of the ocean and cliffs. After 2 hours the contestants were relieved to jump into a kayak, have a quick paddle through Thalane bay and then swim to collect tokens before a long kayak section through a wonderful gorge that became narrower and more twisty as we progressed. It was quite magnificent with sheer, plant covered walls on both sides.
A steep running section followed, which included a rocky river bed, which was a bit slippery in places. Then there was another swim and back on the bikes, for a short pedal before another run around the forest. The final leg of the race consisted of biking on a road then onto the beach. Cycling through the waves and over the rocks and a tricky cargo net where they had to drag their bikes behind them. The contestants were surprised with the final swim with life jackets just when we thought we were finished, we had to put life jackets and swim around a short ocean course and run back through the resort to the finish line.
The exciting day ended with well-deserved beer and then later at the awards dinner, with delicious food. Plans are already under way on how best to improve and make the race more thrilling for next year.
