HEART PROBLEM KIDS
680,000 BAHT DONATED TO THE FUND FROM THE
SAMITIVEJ CHRISTMAS MARKET 2012
Celebrating its Children’s Hospital’s 9th anniversary, the inaugural Samitivej Christmas Market raised 680,000 baht for the Samitivej Heart Fund (New Life Foundation), which offers free heart surgery to underprivileged and financially troubled children. The Christmas Market took place December 1-2 in the grounds of the Samitivej Srinakarin Children’s Hospital.
With the concept of “Food Fair Fun” there were activities for every member of the family, including Ferris wheel, carousel and bouncy castle, Santa & Santa House, international food zone, a shopping zone, a classic car parade and activities on stage.
The market was kindly supported by leading Thai and international organizations, including international schools, embassies, international chambers of commerce in Thailand, international communities in Thailand, Thais and foreigners. The total income after expenses from the event was 680,000 baht which will be presented to the New Life Fund.
The Samitivej Heart Fund (New Life Foundation) was established in 2010 to help children with heart problems. Statistics show that one in every 100 children in Thailand suffers from congenital heart disease. As many as 4,000 heart disease children per year have heart problems and are waiting for operations. However, only 2,500 children are lucky enough to afford an operation, leaving another 1,500 on waiting lists at public hospitals around the country. Heart surgery is costly and many families cannot afford it. A number of young children have lost their lives while waiting for surgery.
Since the establishment of the Fund, the hospital has provided free operations to 65 children with heart disease. These cases were completed successfully in honour of the 60th anniversary of their Majesties’ royal wedding. With a commitment to enhancing the quality of life of Thais, the New Life Foundation will continue to fund free heart surgery to the best of its ability.
